The Rich Get Richer With MLB’s Top Teams Making Trades
Coming into Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, it has been very interesting to note which teams are looking for and adding help. And it’s not exactly the teams that you would expect to see. Rather, it’s some of the better teams: The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros. Most of the time, you see the ‘mid-tier’ teams making moves in an effort to move up. But this year, the intensity has been ratcheted up. And while you always give up talent in order to get a deal done, these teams still appear to have only gotten stronger…
Let’s start with the Red Sox, who have baseball’s best record by a country mile at this point. With second baseman Dustin Pedroia once again sidelined (for an unknown period of time), they were looking for some depth. They went out and got it by trading two minor league relievers for Ian Kinsler. The 36 year old veteran is not having a great season, but his experience could be just what is needed as they try to make a run to October and beyond.
Chasing down the Red Sox in the AL East currently are the Yankees. They have done a lot already in the trade window this year, but they have added even more now. Starting pitching has been an issue this season due to injuries, so they have addressed it by adding Lance Lynn from the Minnesota Twins for two prospects. Like Kinsler, he isn’t having the greatest of seasons, but he did have a very good showing in Boston just a few nights ago, and that will have the Yankees hopeful this is a good move.
And then there’s the Astros, who have made perhaps the most interesting move. They have traded suspended reliever Roberto Osuna, formerly of the Toronto Blue Jays, for closer Ken Giles and a couple of prospects. Osuna will be postseason eligible because his suspension was for domestic abuse. Nonetheless, Houston will be hoping that he can add an explosive arm to the bullpen after an All-Star season last year.
With just hours left in the deadline to go now, things are ramping up. We could well see Bryce Harper in a new uniform very soon, according to reports, so this could be just the tip of the iceberg.
