U.S. Open leaderboard 2022: Live golf scores, results from Thursday’s Round 1

Jon Rahm is getting set to defend his U.S. Open title at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., but all anyone can seem to talk about is the upstart LIV Golf tour.

The Saudi-backed start-up held its first event last weekend and saw 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel win it and take home the $4 million grand prize. Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson have already played on that tour, but now, Bryson DeChambeauPatrick Reed and Rickie Fowler are set to join them, and that has created some distractions ahead of golf’s third major of 2022.

Nonetheless, Rahm is staying focused on the task at hand. After all, he is preparing to defend his title against a stacked field that includes within it 29 of the top 30 players in the world. The only one of the top 30 not playing is Paul Casey, who has dealt with back problems for the majority of the 2022 PGA Tour season.

Rahm will face stiff competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, who are both coming off a strong week at the Canadian Open. The No. 2 golfer in the world is paired with Collin Morikawa — the world’s No.  7-ranked golfer — and 2021 U.S. Amateur champion, James Piot during his first two rounds.

Elsewhere, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will look to push Rahm and win his second major of the season. Scheffler won the Masters back in April. Meanwhile, Mickelson will also play in this week’s event as he looks to complete the career grand slam with a U.S. Open title.

This week marks Mickelson’s first involvement with the PGA Tour since January. The U.S. Open is governed by the USGA, but it is also considered a part of the PGA Tour as well as the European and Asian Tours. Already, Mickelson has drawn plenty of attention for his remarks about LIV Golf, and it will be interesting to see if the verbal fireworks spill over onto the golf course.
