In what has been one of the toughest business droughts in NFL history, there is an new alternative that will start in 2020: the XFL.

WWE CEO and chairman announced thursday that the return, which has been rumored a lot, is set to come to fruition in two years.

McMahon promised what he calls “football reimagined” for the XFL, avoiding politics. The return of the XFL is set for January or February of 2020 and will be a 10-game season with shorter regulation games than the NFL.

“The new XFL is an exciting opportunity to reimagine America’s favorite sport,” said McMahon. “As we move towards kickoff, we look forward to listening and implementing innovative ideas from players, coaches, medical experts, technology executives, the media and most importantly football fans.”

This idea was originally put into place when the XFL kicked off its first season ever in 2001, but failed after one season despite big TV commitments from NBC.

This year, the games will be streamed online which, McMahon promised would be “shorter, fast-paced games and a family-friendly environment.”

“People don’t want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained,” McMahon told “We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time.”
