Warriors, Kerr Reach Agreement for Extension

With all of the attention going toward NBA free agency and mostly to the likes of LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard right now, many would miss out on the fact that the Golden State Warriors have, reportedly, agreed to extend coach Steve Kerr’s deal with the team. While there are few specifics about the deal currently in terms of news or money as of yet, it looks as if Kerr will be one of the highest paid coaches in the league now. And that makes sense given just what all he has accomplished.

He now has won three NBA titles with the team, two in a row and three of the last four. He’s reached four NBA Finals in a row, and he has produced some startling results in the regular season as well. He’s had health issues, but he still remained a big part of this team, no matter what people may believe about him. He is quickly becoming a coaching figure that demands respect and attention, and he has to be looked upon as a real pioneer as well given what he has done to help change the game.

Is he a different coach from Phil Jackson? Absolutely. But it has to be said that he has changed the game just as much as Phil did, if not more. In fact, Kerr re-upping with the Warriors could be the biggest move of the off season. While he wouldn’t have been out of contract had they not done this, it still does a lot in terms of keeping him happy. And keeping the coach of this team happy is a very big deal.

Many believe anyone could coach the current Warriors team, but it takes a lot of skill and man management to juggle so many good players throughout a season. Not just anyone could do it. Furthermore, who is to say that those players would be sticking around if they hired anyone else to do the job? This is likely the biggest reason this is done. Soon, the Warriors dynasty will be put to the test off the court. If the players leave, it could all crumble down rather quickly. Kerr, and his more sizable checkbook, now could be the only one standing in the way of that fate.
