When is Liverpool vs. Chelsea? Date, time, schedule for Premier League fixtures 2022/23

After four memorable tussles with Liverpool in the 2021/22 season, Chelsea perhaps have more reason than any Premier League club to want to beat the Reds during the 2022/23 campaign.

The two long-standing rivals have never been as close as they were during a season when they also met twice at Wembley, Liverpool winning on penalties on both occasions after 0-0 draws in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

That inseparability benefitted Manchester City most. Liverpool would have lifted the title had they won either league game against Chelsea, who finished 19 points behind the champions.

Chelsea know that beating Liverpool in 2022/23 would be a sign that they are genuine title contenders. When will their chance for revenge materialise? Here’s how the schedule looks.

Liverpool vs. Chelsea rivalry

These teams have always been top-flight teams when they have met, and their showdowns in 2021/22 were typical of the tight games that have made this fixture one of the most unpredictable and enticing for fans.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 7-4 during their title-winning campaign of 1946/47 — the first after the Second World War interrupted football in England — and the visitors sealed the league title at Stamford Bridge through Kenny Dalglish’s only goal of the game in 1986.

There have been numerous memorable flashpoints: Jose Mourinho taunted Liverpool fans when his formidable Chelsea side won 3-2 at Anfield in 2005, and Luis Suarez infamously bit Branislav Ivanovic’s arm during a 2-2 draw at Liverpool in 2013.

Cruelly for a player as brilliant as Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain’s slip to gift Chelsea a goal in a 2-0 win at Anfield in April 2014 is (perhaps unfairly) remembered as the key moment in the title race that season, as his team fell away to finish two points behind Manchester City.

In modern times, cup competitions have repeatedly provided high drama between these teams. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 in the 2005 Champions League semifinals and won again at the same stage on penalties in 2007.

Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were among the scorers as Chelsea beat Liverpool 4-3 on aggregate in the Champions League final four the following season, and Drogba and Lampard again lit up the tie as Chelsea prevailed 7-5 on aggregate in the quarterfinals in 2009.

Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2012 FA Cup final in Kenny Dalglish’s final game in charge, and Liverpool won 5-4 on aggregate in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, Sadio Mane having scored their goals in a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

Liverpool vs. Chelsea head-to-head record

Liverpool have 84 wins to Chelsea’s 64 in this fixture, with 43 draws between the sides, who first met in 1907.

The record is even tighter in the modern Premier League; Liverpool have 23 victories against 21 for the Blues, with 16 draws along the way.

The goals advantage could swing again if Chelsea can beat Liverpool during the 2022/23 season; they currently have 71 goals against Liverpool’s 73 in Premier League meetings.

Chelsea have the better clean sheets record in the Premier League, keeping 17 to Liverpool’s 15 in games between the teams, but also have a worse disciplinary record: eight red cards to their rivals’ three, as well as 15 more bookings in the fixture.

Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea over 90 minutes in their last five attempts in all competitions ahead of the 2022/23 season, stretching across almost two years. They were on a four-game winning run against Chelsea until Mason Mount ended that sequence with the only goal of the game at Anfield in March 2021.
