Liverpool vs. Everton rivalry

Last season Liverpool won both of the meetings between the two teams. At Goodison Park in December, when Rafa Benitez was still in charge of Everton, Liverpool ran out 4-1 winners. Jordan Henderson put Liverpool ahead, with Mohamed Salah then making it 2-0. Although Demarai Gray got a goal back for Everton, Liverpool scored twice more, with Salah getting his second of the game and Diogo Jota also finding the net.

In April, Liverpool won 2-0 at Anfield with Andy Robertson and Divock Origi scoring as Klopp’s team boosted their hopes of winning the title.

Liverpool ended up finishing second in the Premier League as they missed out on the title by one point to City.

Everton, meanwhile, were locked in a relegation battle for much of the campaign but finished in 16th place, four points above the drop zone.

The Merseyside derby is the longest-running top-flight derby in England, having been played continuously since the 1962-63 campaign. There is less than a mile between the two clubs’ home grounds and there are many families in the city who include both Liverpool and Everton supporters.

The two teams faced each other in the 1986 FA Cup final, which Liverpool won 3-1. They also met in the FA Cup final three years later, with Liverpool winning 3-2. The game was played just five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster.
