Dogs can sense danger – but it appears they can sniff out a warm, loving home too.

A woman has been left in hysterics after a stranger’s dog climbed in to bed with her on a stormy night.

Believing her husband accidentally left the door ajar, the dog is thought to have snuck in for shelter after running away from home.

The dog, named Nala, seemingly walked about two miles in the middle of the night before arriving at Julie Thornton Johnson’s home in Tennessee, America.

She told The Mirror : “She had gotten loose from her parents on Saturday afternoon and ran off.

“It started storming around 4am and I assume she was really scared of thunder and ran to the first house that smelled like friendly people and dogs.”

Having walked straight past Julie’s dogs, Zeppelin, Hollis and Jupiter, cheeky Nala jumped in to bed for some comforting snuggles.

As Julie’s dogs regularly climb in to bed with her, she didn’t think anything of it until she had woken up enough to process what was happening.

Explaining her reaction, she added: “At first, I was a little scared. Who wouldn’t be? A big scary-looking brown dog, but within 10 seconds we knew she was friendly.

“My husband tried to pull the blankets up and she snuggled in a lot closer and wouldn’t budge, she just kept wanting love from me and my husband.

Joking about how she is going to fire her three dogs from their security post, she says they didn’t seem to care that Nala let herself in.

The couple wrote a Facebook post about their unexpected visitor, hoping it would reach Nala’s owner.

Thankfully, her owners spotted it and came forward to collect their adventurous dog.

They said on Facebook: “Our overly friendly pup, Nala, has hit an all time record for ignoring personal space and added yet another trick to her long list of Houdini acts.

“She slipped her collar, ran down the street to a neighbour’s house, somehow managed to get in their house, and climbed in to bed with them in the middle of the night.

“The woman and her husband have three dogs of their own that all sleep in bed with them.

“None of their dogs reacted to a random dog climbing into bed with them and the couple didn’t even realise that it wasn’t their dog in bed with them until the sun started to come up.

“Shame on Nala for somehow breaking into a stranger’s house and invading their personal space.

“Thankfully, the couple thought it was hilarious and they aren’t even mad about it.

“Side note: They live quite a few houses down so I’m using the term ‘neighbour’ loosely.

“Thank you Julie for keeping her safe, treating Nala like your own, and making sure you got the word out for us to find her.”

Wanting Nala to know she is welcome any time, Julie and Nala’s owner have arranged to meet up this week so their dogs can enjoy a playdate.

She added: “They are coming over with Nala for treats and I’m going to get some ice cream for them. Let them play in our yard for a little while.”
