The MLB trading deadline is only drawing closer, and with that a number of moves have been made over the past couple of weeks. The biggest of which appears to have been the arrival of Manny Machado in Los Angeles after he swapped his Orioles colors for the blue of the Dodgers. But perhaps just as big as that could be the trade that the Yankees have, reportedly, made now in order to shore up their rotation. According to reports, the New York Yankees have brought in J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays, who aren’t anywhere near the worst team in the league at the moment, are woefully off the pace of the Yankees and Boston Red Sox, and thus have decided to allow Happ to depart to the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees, who have had a rash of problems on the mound this season have been shopping for some pitching for a month or so now, and this move makes plenty of sense. Happ has won 10 games already, though his record is 10-6 with an ERA of 4.18 in 20 starts. Not bad numbers at all, and you’d have to think the wins total could improve with a better lineup around like the Yankees have.

This comes just days after the Yanks added reliever Zach Britton to the bullpen for some prospects. Reportedly they will be losing the services of Brandon Drury, a third baseman, and an outfield prospect as well. This is a bit of a return to the Yankees of old where they would forgo the future for a run in the present. But who is to blame them? They have one of the best, most exciting lineups in the game, and all they need is a bit of pitching to help them.

However, they do face a couple of huge obstacles. Not only are the defending World Series Champion Houston Astros going to be tough, but their division rival Red Sox will be as well. Boston are 5.5 games ahead currently on them, putting them in a precarious spot. Should they not get first in the AL East, they would have to play the dreaded Wild Card game. That would not sit the easiest with them, nor should it, because just one bad game could see them out of the playoffs entirely. Still yet, this is a move that will definitely help make the close of the season more interesting with the two heavy hitters jockeying for position.
