Yankees Down Astros in Extras to Stay Within Reach of Sox
Two of the teams that are expected to play a role this year in the MLB American League Playoffs met on Tuesday night what turned out to be quite the game. The Houston Astros, leaders of the AL Central, took on the AL East’s second placed Yankees in New York, and the game did not disappoint. In what was a rematch of last year’s ALCS in which the Astros won, the Yankees would gain a measure of revenge here by winning 6-5.
They didn’t have it easy at all, though, and they were forced to come from behind in order to grab the win out of the jaws of defeat. The Yankees scored in each of the first two innings, taking an early 2-1 lead into the fourth inning. But from there, the Astros would pile on the pressure by scoring twice in the fourth and fifth with just one in reply from the home team. Heading into the ninth inning, the Yankees found themselves in a 5-3 hole, largely due to making five errors, and they would have to do some damage at the plate to rescue the game.
They did just that through Brett Gardner. With a runner on first base, the left fielder would hit a two-run home run to tie the game and force it into extra innings. From there, the momentum was on the Yankees side as they kept Houston off the board in the top of the tenth. Cue Gleyber Torres to the plate. The rookie, just a month or so into his tenure in the big leagues, entered the batter’s box with Mario Andjuar on second base. And he would deliver his second game-winning hit in his short career to give them a win.
The win keeps the Yankees two back of the Red Sox for the division lead. They would prefer to win the division, of course, but they also have a pretty decent gap over the other teams in the Wild Card race. As for the ‘stros, they are now only a game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for first place in the AL West, giving them work to do just like the Yankees if they want to secure a division title.
