The final score may not indicate as much, but the New York Yankees had quite a tough game in Game 1 of their ALDS series with the Tampa Bay Rays in San Diego on Monday night. The final score did indeed up being 9-3, but that didn’t come nearly as comfortably as it appears. They were leading 4-3 going into the ninth.
That’s when they busted the game open via a double from Aaron Hicks (who was 3-4 on the night) and a grand slam from Giancarlo Stanton. Previously, both starters had given up some runs but had not been damaged too greatly. Gerrit Cole gave up three runs in six solid innings of work, and that proved to be enough for the Yankees, who are the lower seed, to get the edge over their AL East rivals.
