In what had been a forgone conclusion in many eyes, the New York Yankees have confirmed their place as hosts in the American League Wild Card Game to be held early next week after defeating the Boston Red Sox 11-6 in a slugfest at Fenway Park on Friday night. The Yankees have been destined for the Wild Card Game after losing a fateful series to Boston a couple of months ago and then losing Aaron Judge to injury. For a brief moment in time, they looked like they could possibly fall out of the playoffs entirely. But that was an exaggeration, and the victory last night, which also saw them tie the MLB record for most home runs in a season at 264. They have two more games to break the record, and you’d have to back them to do just that. As for the Wild Card match up, they will be facing the Oakland A’s on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. Should they win, they would be facing the Red Sox in the ALDS in what would be a fantastic series for fans all over the world.

Baker Mayfield’s showing last week to help the Cleveland Browns win their first game in almost two years helped get the word out for Christian Yelich’s candidacy for NL MVP, and the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder continues to show why he is deserving. With his brother, a marine recently returned from action in the stadium and throwing the first pitch, Yelich didn’t take long to make a statement by hitting a two run homer in the first inning to get the Brew Crew off to a great start. His two RBIs helped them win 6-5 over the Detroit Tigers, crucially keeping them one game behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central battle. They’ve still got a chance to win the division, and that’s all they can ask for at this point.

Another team that is very close to winning their division is the Colorado Rockies. The NL West leaders could clinch the division on Saturday with a win and a Dodgers loss, but they got some great news on Friday. Their 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals, which saw outfielder David Dahl hit a home run for the fifth straight game running, confirmed their place in at least the Wild Card game in what has been a crazy close NL race this year. With their home field being at altitude, the Rockies could be set to make a huge run in the postseason by using it fully to their advantage.
