School Nurse Stories: Teenagers Are Strange Creatures
“A young male came in with glass shards buried in his hand all up between the tendons and bones. The conversation went as followed:
“What happened?”
“I punched a display case.”
“…why?”
“I thought it was plastic.”
“…”
“I wasn’t angry, I was just really pumped and I wanted to punch something! If I’d known it was gonna break I wouldn’tve done it!”
Teenagers. god bless em.”
School Nurse Stories: From Bad to Much Worse
“In 2nd grade, I went screaming in pain to the nurses office after I fell off the swing. She gave me an ice pack and sent me back to class. Turns out my arm was broken.
Now, seven years later, I hear she’s in jail for raping a kid.”
Prevent the Spread of Sickness
“She had a kid in one of her classes who was immune suppressed due to cancer treatments or something. The school had, with permission of the kid’s parents, sent out a note to all the kids parents asking them to be especially vigilant about not sending their kids to school sick.
Different kid comes to school coughing all over everything, running a high fever. They call the parents. He had MRSA and the parents knew and sent him to school anyway.”
School Nurse Stories: Orange Juice and a Glass Eye
“On my first day on my first placement as a student nurse, I was looking after a dementia patient, and no one told me he had a fake eye. I was horrified when he pulled his eye out of its socket and rolled it down the corridor. I went running after it to give it back to him… he washed it in his orange juice and put it back in his socket while I stood there in surprise.”
Cold Medicine Overdose
Girl comes in looking a little bit more alive than a mummy. Just huge dark rings, barely walking, not alert in the least. Nurse freaks out and asks what’s wrong and what has she taken. Girl says “cold medicine” the nurse asks her repeatedly what kind. Finally, she gets the office to give her the mom’s phone number and calls her. Daughter is basically comatose at this point and I’m sitting there thinking I’m watching someone die in front of me.
Turns out the mom had told the daughter to take some cold medicine before going to school. Daughter comes down with a variety (nyquil, alka-seltzer cold, etc) and asks which one. Mom says any, but the daughter supposedly heard “take them all”. Nurse makes mom come up to the school and take daughter to hospital while yelling at her for trying to kill her daughter. Meanwhile, I’m watching a massive drool pool form on the chicks shirt. Girl is mumbling she didn’t know that you shouldn’t take a bunch of cold meds while stumbling out of the room.
Mold Smell on Repeat
One day a classmate decided to snort a piece of paper. No real reason other than because he could. About a week later he came into class with a weird look on his face and he kept sniffing things. After a while I asked him what was wrong and he said “I keep smelling shit, but I never find shit!” So after about half an hour of smelling things in the room he went to the school nurse. That’s when they discovered that the paper he snorted was still in his nose and was molding.
