Riot Games Ends 2XKO Development by Year-end Due to Low Retention

Date:

Riot Games has announced that it will conclude active development on its free-to-play fighting game, 2XKO, by the end of December 2026. The decision comes less than a year after the game’s official launch on PC and consoles, with the publisher attributing the cessation of 2XKO development to insufficient player retention needed for long-term sustainability.

According to Riot Games, while the game initially attracted many players and fostered a dedicated community, it failed to maintain a large enough player base to justify continued investment. The company stated that 2XKO has been significantly more expensive to operate than the revenue it generates, with player engagement remaining largely flat despite numerous updates and content additions throughout the year.

The developer noted that its original vision for 2XKO was to create a game that resonated with the fighting game community (FGC), addressing common genre challenges such as unreliable netcode and solitary ranked play. The free-to-play model was intended to make the genre more accessible, hoping to attract new players and grow the audience over time. Although Riot Games observed isolated instances of success within the FGC, including high-level play and tournament inclusions, these efforts did not translate into the sustained growth required for the game’s viability.

Upcoming Content and Player Compensation

Before active development concludes, Riot Games plans to release additional content and improvements for 2XKO. The remaining months of 2026 will see the introduction of new features, bug fixes, and two new champions: Lux and Samira. GamesRadar+ reported that Lux, who was announced at Evo 2026, would arrive with a September update, while Samira, the final champion, is slated for an October update that GamesRadar+ described as the ‘final major content patch.’ However, Riot Games and Kotaku both stated that the final bug fix patch is intended for December of this year.

In a move to compensate its player base, Riot Games will refund all money spent on 2XKO on or before August 20. Players will retain any content they have purchased. Additionally, all champions will be unlocked for free, starting with patch 1.3.1 in September, which will also bundle most cosmetic items, making avatar and player profile items unlockable with in-game Credits. The ability to purchase KO Points and use physical prepaid cards for 2XKO has been disabled, with PC players’ KO Points and Starter Edition purchases being refunded to their original payment methods.

The Business of Live-Service Gaming

Riot Games’ decision to end active development for 2XKO highlights the inherent challenges within the free-to-play live-service gaming model, even for established publishers. The company openly acknowledged the financial reality that the game’s operational costs significantly outweighed its earnings, leading to an unsustainable trajectory. This situation offers a critical lesson for the global gaming industry on the minimum player thresholds required to sustain free-to-play titles and the importance of player retention over initial engagement.

The game’s journey was marked by difficulties from its official launch in January, including console issues and the layoff of 80 employees shortly after release, as reported by Kotaku and GamesRadar+. Despite its presence at major events like the EVO main stage, these efforts could not reverse the declining player engagement. Kotaku noted a ‘bitter irony’ in Riot’s initial ambition to gradually build an audience compared to the swift halt in development less than a year later.

While active development ceases, 2XKO servers will remain online beyond 2026, ensuring that players can continue to access online features. Offline play will also remain unaffected. Riot Games has committed to providing advance notice should this status change. The company has also affirmed its intention to continue exploring new genres and ways to bring players together in the future, learning from its experience with 2XKO.
