Palou, Mclaughlin on Pole for Indycar Milwaukee Doubleheader after Crash

Date:

The IndyCar Milwaukee Doubleheader weekend commenced with drama as championship contender Kyle Kirkwood and defending race winner Christian Rasmussen were involved in a heavy practice crash on Friday at the Milwaukee Mile, as reported by INDYCAR.com. Despite the incident, qualifying on Saturday saw Scott McLaughlin and championship leader Alex Palou secure pole positions for the two races in West Allis, Wisconsin, setting the stage for intense competition.

Scott McLaughlin, driving the #3 Team Penske Chevrolet, initially posted the fastest opening lap at 165.536mph to claim provisional pole for Race 1. However, he will not start from the front due to a grid penalty for an unapproved engine change, a sanction also applied to Alex Palou and David Malukas. Consequently, Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, who recorded the fourth-fastest opening lap at 164.019mph, will be promoted to the Race 1 starting pole, according to Motorsport.com.

For Sunday’s Race 2, reigning and four-time IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou secured pole position in his #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Palou’s second qualifying lap, at 164.658mph, narrowly edged out O’Ward by a margin of 0.0003 seconds. These engine penalties do not carry over to Race 2, meaning Palou will retain his starting position.

Historic Track Hosts Key Championship Battle

The Milwaukee Mile, located on the grounds of Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, is hosting the NTT IndyCar Series’ only doubleheader of the 2026 season. As FOX Sports highlighted, the track holds historical significance, having opened in 1903 as the world’s oldest continuously operating motor speedway. The 1.015-mile short oval features 9 degrees of banking in its turns, presenting unique challenges where cars cannot stay flat through corners and must rotate effectively without sacrificing speed on the straights.

The weekend features two 250-mile races. The Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250 is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, with FOX coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET and the green flag at 2:50 p.m. ET. The Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 follows on Sunday, August 30, with FOX coverage starting at 1 p.m. ET and the green flag at 1:20 p.m. ET. This Sunday race also marks the final oval event of the 2026 season.

Championship Stakes and International Viewer Engagement

The IndyCar Milwaukee Doubleheader carries significant implications for the championship title. Alex Palou arrives with a substantial 91-point lead over Kyle Kirkwood, with 553 points to Kirkwood’s 462, as reported by FOX Sports. Christian Lundgaard sits third with 443 points, followed by David Malukas (411) and Pato O’Ward (399). With only three races remaining this season, including both Milwaukee events, Palou has an opportunity to clinch his fifth NTT IndyCar Series championship during this doubleheader weekend.

While primarily centered in North America, the NTT IndyCar Series captures international interest through its diverse lineup of drivers from various nations. Competitors such as Spain’s Alex Palou, New Zealand’s Scott McLaughlin, and Denmark’s Christian Rasmussen contribute to the global appeal of the series, drawing a wide international viewership interested in high-stakes motorsports. The drama of a potential championship clinching at a historic venue like the Milwaukee Mile resonates with racing fans across the globe, highlighting the intense competition and advanced engineering inherent in top-tier racing.

As the IndyCar Milwaukee Doubleheader progresses, all eyes will be on Alex Palou’s bid for his fifth championship title and the intense competition unfolding on the historic oval. The performances in these critical races will significantly shape the final standings as the series approaches its conclusion, providing compelling action for racing enthusiasts worldwide.
