US Lawmakers Call Out ‘Sketchy’ Detention of Gaza Doctor, Demand Release – No Cap!

Date:

A group of six progressive US Congress members just dropped a statement, and no cap, they’re straight up condemning Israel’s alleged abuse of Palestinian healthcare workers. The focus is squarely on the detention of a prominent Gaza doctor, Hussam Abu Safia, who has reportedly been held by Israeli forces since 2024. This isn’t just a one-off call; it’s bringing some serious heat to the ongoing concerns about how Palestinian medical professionals are being treated amidst the conflict, with the report highlighting allegations of them being targeted and detained during the country’s war on Gaza.

The lawmakers, including well-known figures like Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, signed off on the statement that paints a pretty grim picture. According to the document, Israel’s actions have systematically dismantled Palestine’s health system over the last three years, with a reported 1,700 Palestinian medical staff, from doctors to paramedics, allegedly murdered and dozens of hospitals destroyed. It’s highkey alarming, with hundreds more healthcare workers reportedly arrested and arbitrarily detained, and at least 16 physicians, including Dr. Abu Safia, said to be held in ‘inhumane conditions’.

Dr. Abu Safia’s case, as detailed in the report, is particularly harrowing. Lawyers representing the doctor claim he has been subjected to severe abuses, including torture, sleep deprivation, and beatings during his detention. He was reportedly arrested back in December 2024 after he and other medical staff allegedly refused to evacuate from Kamal Adwan Hospital. What’s more, according to the article, no charges have been filed against him, and he hasn’t even had a trial, which, for real, raises major red flags about due process.

The congressional statement argues that these attacks on health infrastructure and the detention of medical personnel are part of an ‘intentional policy designed to further occupation, apartheid, and genocide against the Palestinian people’. This assessment isn’t just coming from Capitol Hill; it’s echoed by a growing number of rights organizations, scholars, and United Nations officials who have been vocal about their concerns regarding Israeli actions in the Palestinian strip. The destruction of nearly all of Gaza’s hospitals and medical centers is seen by many as an effort to deny essential services like food, water, and medical treatment to Palestinians.

While Israeli officials have claimed they target hospitals and medical facilities because they’re allegedly used by Palestinian armed groups for operations, the report states that such claims have often failed to withstand scrutiny. A stark example mentioned is the March 2025 incident where Israel reportedly admitted its soldiers killed 15 emergency workers in southern Gaza. Initially, the official story was that an ambulance convoy had approached soldiers ‘suspiciously’, with unsubstantiated claims of links to Hamas. However, a report by Forensic Architecture and Earshot later found that Israeli soldiers allegedly fired over 900 bullets at a clearly marked ambulance convoy, killing some medics in an ‘execution-style’ manner before burying their bodies and vehicles, which just hits different when you hear the details.
