Webull’s China Ties Raise National Security Concerns

Date:

A bipartisan congressional panel has found that digital investment platform Webull, which has 28 million global users, is ‘tied in structural ways’ to China’s government, posing a national security threat to U.S. finance.

The House Select Committee on China’s report, released on Wednesday, asserts that Webull’s ownership architecture, technical workforce, technology infrastructure, cross-border data routing, corporate financing, and compliance frameworks are all connected to the People’s Republic of China.

Webull’s National Security Risk

The panel alleges that Webull’s China ties have ‘escalated’ since October 2025, when the company began carrying customer cash directly, creating a ‘structural exposure of billions of dollars in American capital.’

The committee also claims that Webull misrepresented the number of its China-based employees, initially stating it had none, but later revealing that 62% of its global workforce, or 863 employees, are based in mainland China.

Why This Matters for an International Audience

This story matters for an international audience because it highlights the complexities of global finance and the risks associated with doing business with companies tied to foreign governments. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the potential for national security risks and data breaches increases, making this a pressing concern for investors, policymakers, and citizens alike.

The report’s findings also raise questions about the role of China in the global financial system and the potential for Beijing to exert influence over U.S. companies.
