Palmowski Claims Fifth F1 Academy Win in Austin, Extends Championship Lead

Date:

Alisha Palmowski secured her fifth F1 Academy win of the 2026 season in Austin, Texas, on Friday, October 24. The Red Bull Racing driver triumphed in the Opening Race at the Circuit of the Americas, navigating early pressure and two Safety Car periods to further extend her lead in the Drivers’ Standings.

Starting from pole position, Palmowski faced an immediate challenge from Payton Westcott, who took the lead into Turn 1. However, Westcott’s Mercedes struggled for traction, allowing Palmowski to regain the lead through Turns 7 and 8, as reported by F1 Academy. Westcott’s difficulties continued, leading her to drop to eighth place after running wide at Turn 9. The opening lap also saw a Safety Car deployment following contact between Megan Bruce, Rafaela Ferreira, and Rachel Robertson, which forced Robertson to retire.

This initial interruption erased Palmowski’s early advantage, bringing Nina Gademan and Alba Larsen into contention for the restart on Lap 4. Palmowski maintained her lead as racing resumed, while Larsen quickly moved past Gademan into second place. This manoeuvre, however, involved an an excursion beyond track limits, attracting the attention of race stewards, according to F1 Academy.

As Palmowski and Larsen began to pull away from Gademan, Larsen steadily reduced the gap to the leader, setting consecutive fastest laps despite her earlier incident remaining under investigation. Further back, Emma Felbermayr, an Audi driver, made significant progress from 11th on the grid, climbing to fifth place as she aimed to keep her title hopes alive. Lisa Billard also had an impressive run, securing fourth position.

Contested Battles and Championship Implications

With three laps remaining, a second Safety Car period was triggered by contact between Ella Lloyd and Ava Dobson on Lap 10, ending Dobson’s race and bunching the field for a final sprint. Under these yellow flag conditions, Larsen received an instruction to return second place to Gademan due to her earlier off-track overtake. This position change occurred once racing resumed, as overtaking is prohibited under Safety Car conditions, F1 Academy noted.

At the final restart, Palmowski executed a clean getaway, while Gademan and Larsen engaged in a close fight for second. Larsen attempted to reclaim her position, drawing alongside her teammate, but Gademan successfully defended, maintaining second place. This battle provided Palmowski with crucial breathing room, allowing the British driver to cross the finish line for her fifth victory of the season.

Gademan ultimately finished second, achieving her fourth podium in five races, just ahead of Larsen, who secured her third consecutive podium finish. The result also marked a third consecutive double podium for MP Motorsport. Lisa Billard earned a career-best fourth place for Gatorade, while Felbermayr’s recovery drive saw her finish fifth.

Title Race Narrows in Austin

Palmowski’s commanding victory further solidified her position at the top of the Drivers’ Standings, extending her lead over Emma Felbermayr to 63 points. This significant advantage puts her in a strong position as the championship progresses. The F1 Academy series attracts an international audience, particularly with its connection to Formula 1, fostering the next generation of female motorsport talent and showcasing competitive racing. The performance of drivers from various international backgrounds, like Palmowski (Red Bull Racing) and Gademan/Larsen (MP Motorsport), highlights the global scope of the series and its growing prominence in the motorsport calendar.

The focus now shifts to the Reverse Grid Race scheduled for Saturday, October 25, at 18:00 local time (UTC-5) at the Circuit of the Americas. This event presents Palmowski with her first opportunity to clinch the 2026 Drivers’ title with a race to spare. Her consistent performance throughout the season, culminating in her dominant win, has set the stage for a potentially historic moment in the F1 Academy championship.

All eyes will be on the Circuit of the Americas as Alisha Palmowski attempts to seal the 2026 F1 Academy Drivers’ title in the upcoming Reverse Grid Race. Her consistent form and substantial points lead suggest a thrilling conclusion to the championship battle, further elevating the profile of women’s motorsport on the global stage.
