Ghanaian Teen Javits Frimpong Shot Dead in Bronx; Mother’s US Visa Approved

Date:

A 15-year-old boy from Ghana, Javits Frimpong, was fatally shot in New York City’s Bronx borough on Thursday morning while on his way to school. The incident occurred near Crotona Park, prompting an immediate police investigation that is currently ongoing. Authorities are seeking individuals in connection with the shooting, which has deeply impacted the local community and international observers.

According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), officers responded to a report of a shooting on Thursday morning, finding Javits Frimpong with a gunshot wound to his stomach. As reported by The Guardian, this took place around 9:24 am. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Surveillance footage obtained by authorities reportedly shows Javits running, pursued by a person dressed entirely in black, with other masked individuals in dark clothing later seen fleeing the scene, according to The Guardian and NBC New York. Police have yet to make any arrests and are searching for up to three teenage boys in connection with the attack, as stated by law enforcement sources.

Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, conveyed his profound grief to reporters, stating, ‘I lost him. I don’t know what to do now.’ He described his son, who had arrived in the United States from Ghana just one year prior, as ‘clever’ and ‘quiet.’ Mr. Frimpong also indicated to NBC New York that his son had been experiencing bullying at the DreamYard preparatory school. He claimed the school principal had recently informed him that two students were suspended for harassing Javits. However, an NYPD spokesperson declined to comment on whether these bullying reports were related to the shooting, The Guardian reported.

Investigation Underway as Community Mourns

The deadly attack has sent shockwaves through the Bronx’s Claremont neighborhood and the city’s broader West African community. Witnesses described seeing the teenager run past their windows before collapsing shortly after hearing gunfire, according to NBC New York. Despite a reported decrease in gun violence in the neighborhood, with shootings down 37% and murders down 44% compared to 2025, the incident has intensified calls for safety.

The search for suspects continues, with law enforcement sources indicating that up to three individuals fled the scene. The precise circumstances leading to the shooting and whether Javits was the intended target remain unclear as the investigation progresses. The Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective, a US-based non-profit, issued a statement on Friday lamenting that Javits’ family had come to America ‘with hopes of greater opportunity, security, and a promising future.’ They have called for comprehensive answers regarding his killing and increased engagement from city leaders to address community concerns.

International Response and Family Support Efforts

The killing of Javits Frimpong has resonated internationally, drawing condemnation from Ghana’s government. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, released a statement on Friday expressing outrage and pledging, ‘We will pursue justice and we will make sure that those who did this do not get away with it.’ This tragic event underscores the profound impact on immigrant families seeking a safer, more prosperous future abroad, highlighting the need for robust support systems and justice when such aspirations are shattered.

In a significant development, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Saturday that President Donald Trump has agreed to grant an immediate travel visa to Javits Frimpong’s mother. Mamdani, who had spoken with President Trump, posted on X that ‘Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person.’ The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding this decision, as reported by Gothamist. Mayor Mamdani’s office confirmed that grief counselors, outreach specialists, and other resources have been deployed to the affected neighborhood, acknowledging that the devastation extends beyond the immediate family to the entire community and diaspora.

The Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective also noted other violent acts affecting Ghanaian diaspora members in the Bronx, including an elderly couple beaten and robbed, and a man fatally stabbed earlier in the year. While the group clarified that there is ‘no established evidence that they were connected or motivated by the victims’ Ghanaian identity,’ they stated that these incidents have heightened safety concerns within the community, prompting calls for direct engagement with city leaders. As the investigation into Javits Frimpong’s death continues, the focus remains on apprehending those responsible, ensuring justice for the family, and addressing broader community safety and support needs.
