The College Football Playoff starts with a rematch as the first round kicks off Friday night.
No. 8 Oklahoma is the host this time as No. 9 Alabama comes to Norman. The Sooners took down the Crimson Tide in November to push their way into the playoff field. Can Oklahoma get it done again?

There’s a reason the over/under is just 40.5 points. It could be a defensive battle.
Before losing to Oklahoma on Nov. 15, the Crimson Tide had won eight games in a row. The Sooners enter the CFP on a four-game win streak. They’ve beaten three ranked teams in that stretch in Tennessee, Alabama and Missouri before ending the regular season with a win over LSU.
Both quarterbacks enter the playoff on similar trajectories. Oklahoma’s John Mateer was the betting favorite for the Heisman after the Auburn game. Alabama QB Ty Simpson was the favorite for the Heisman halfway through the season. Both fell off a bit toward the end of the season.

Oklahoma won the game in Tuscaloosa with just 212 total yards. Part of that was due to the three turnovers it forced, putting the Sooners in advantageous field position. But Oklahoma ran 51 plays to get those 212 yards. Alabama, meanwhile, averaged 5.4 yards per play. Can the Tide replicate that even without much help from the run game?

Oklahoma punter Grayson Miller bobbled the punt snap and Alabama was able to block it in a key area near the red zone.

The Tide have their first real positive play of the game as Ty Simpson finds Lotzeir Brooks for a 29-yard gain. They desperately need some points out of this drive.

This team is a mess right now. There’s plenty of time to get things sorted out, but the committee’s decision to dump Notre Dame from the playoff in favor of Miami while leaving Alabama where it was in the rankings is going to look even worse if Alabama does not come back.

A personal foul on Eddy Pierre-Louis turned a short third down into one that was nearly unachievable. It forced Oklahoma to settle for that field goal.
Had Pierre-Louis not gotten penalized, it’s not hard to see how Alabama could be facing a 14-0 deficit.

The Sooners couldn’t do much with the short field, but kicker Tate Sandell drilled a 51-yard attempt to put OU up two possessions.

The Tide couldn’t get anything going on the ensuing possession and a slightly deflected punt will give the ball back to Oklahoma with a short field.

John Mateer has been terribly ineffective as a passer since his hand injury. But he’s still dangerous as a runner. Given Oklahoma is in a must-win situation, it’s not hard to see him getting at least 15 designed carries over the course of the night.

The over/under closed at 41.5. The previous low since the playoff began in 2014 was 43, when Georgia played Michigan in the Orange Bowl.
After both teams punted to start the game, you can see why. The first team to 20 may win this.

The Tide will give it right back to the Sooners after a short possession of their own goes nowhere.
This had all the trappings of a defensive battle, and the first two possessions showed it may play out that way.

That’s as far as Oklahoma will take it on the opening possession of the game. John Mateer made a couple plays though, and the Sooners will need him comfortable to be successful tonight.
