Alabama vs. Texas A&M live score, updates, results from SEC West game

The most anticipated college football game of the offseason is here between Alabama and unranked Texas A&M. Whether the competition lives up to the hype built up between Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher remains to be seen.

Top-ranked Alabama has upheld its end of the bargain thus far, entering Saturday’s game undefeated and with the No. 1 place in both the AP and Coaches polls. Texas A&M, however, is 3-2 after having started the season ranked sixth in the nation.

Moreover, the Aggies will be without quarterback Max Johnson, who will miss significant time this year with a broken hand. Fisher has not yet named a starter for the game between Haynes King — who was benched in favor of Johnson — and freshman Conner Weigman.

But Alabama is unlikely to be at full strength either, with starting quarterback Bryce Young reportedly sitting out in an abundance of caution after suffering an AC joint sprain vs. Arkansas in Week 5. Jalen Milroe will likely take over starting duties for the game, a week after helping the Crimson Tide fend off a 23-point third quarter by Arkansas in a 49-26 win.

Of course, the personnel is only part of the story in this game. The other, arguably bigger talking point is the very public feud between Saban and Fisher, stemming from accusations by the former that Fisher used an NIL collective to purchase recruits in the Aggies’ top-ranked 2022 recruiting class. Fisher’s was an incendiary response.

Fisher has downplayed the argument between him and his former boss at LSU, but whether the same can be said for Saban is uncertain. The outcome of Saturday’s game will likely be indicative of that, though Fisher and Co. aren’t likely to lie down and let Alabama destroy them.

9:16 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, ALABAMA. Milroe finds Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton on the deep slant for a 35-yard touchdown. Nice job by Burton to break the tackle by Gilbert to give Alabama a 14-7 lead with 5:33 to play.

9:15 p.m.: Gibbs with another big run, cutting it upfield into A&M territory for a 37-yard gain. He was one defender away — Jardin Gilbert — from a long score. First down at the A&M 35.

9:14 p.m.: The kickoff goes for a touchback and Alabama will take over at its 25.

9:11 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, TEXAS A&M. King finds Muhammad on a quick out for a 5-yard touchdown to knot the game at 7 with 6:33 to play in the half.

9:09 p.m.: Bama’s exotic blitz doesn’t land, and King dumps the ball to Chris Marshall for 9 yards to the 5-yard line.

9:08 p.m.: King stays in the pocket and delivers a nice route to the Alabama 17.

9:07 p.m.: Fumble recovery, Texas A&M. Fadil Diggs gets a forced fumble on the strip-sack of Milroe, and Edgerrin Cooper recovers it at the Bama 30.

9:01 p.m.: Alabama’s kickoff team gets a win to only allow a 15-yard return to the A&M 30. That’s where the Aggies will set up shop.

8:59 p.m.: JC Latham is called for unsportsmanlike conduct following the play, moving Alabama back 15 yards on the kickoff.

8:56 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, ALABAMA. Milroe threads a 10-yard pass to Latu for the touchdown to give the Crimson Tide a 7-0 lead with 11:39 left in the second quarter.

8:53 p.m.: Cornerback Denver Harris is down at cornerback, drawing the objection of the home crowd. Tide face second-and-8 as soon as he gets off the field.

8:52 p.m.: Again a Milroe scramble, this one 33 yards down to the 12-yard line. Alabama’s offense so far has been through Milroe’s legs.

8:51 p.m.: Alabama tees up a long shot, but Milroe finds nothing and instead takes it 14 yards to the A&M 46.

8:50 p.m.: A&M jumps offside, resulting in a 5-yard penalty on third-and-4 and a first down.

First quarter: Alabama 0, Texas A&M 0

8:44 p.m.: Chris Braswell gets to King on third-and-3, the first sack of the day. That brings up fourth-and-8, and McKinstry again fields it around the Alabama 30.

8:44 p.m.: A&M breaks out a reverse, which goes for about 5 yards to bring up third-and-3.

8:42 p.m.: King to Achane on the run-pass option, and the running back takes it 8 yards for a first down.

8:41 p.m.: A&M to take over at its 22-yard line.

8:40 p.m.: Alabama goes three-and-out with a dump-off to Gibbs and two straight runs with the running back. The last play was a 7-yard loss, bringing up a punt at the Bama 29.

8:36 p.m.: Again, A&M gets a first down but can’t get much more than that. Aggies will punt on third-and-8 from their 27; McKinstry brings the ball in at the Alabama 30.

8:35 p.m.: That’s twice now that Anderson has nearly blown up a play just for King to dump it off at the last second. He’s dangerously close to his first sack.

8:34 p.m.: King throws the ball over his receiver’s head, but Moose Muhammad III brings it in for an impressive catch for 14 yards to the A&M 25.

8:30 p.m.: Facing third-and-8, Milroe couldn’t get enough on the throw to Latu in the flat. Bama punt team coming in again, and A&M this time will take over. at the 7-yard line.

8:15 p.m.: Milroe completes a 3-yard pass to Jahmyr GIbbs to convert second-and-1. Following that, Gibbs takes it up the gut 25 yards to about the Texas A&M 43.

8:14 p.m.: Milroe is in at quarterback for Bama.

8:13 p.m.: Bama gets pressure on King, who dumps it off for a gain of 4. A&M punts, and Kool-Aid McKinstry takes the fair catch at the 20.
