Alejandro Tosti’s Caddie Quits Mid-round at Biltmore Championship

Date:

Professional golfer Alejandro Tosti was left without a caddie midway through his opening round at the Biltmore Championship on Thursday. Cliff Ellis, the Argentine’s caddie, abruptly departed the course on the 18th hole, which was Tosti’s ninth hole of the day, leaving the 30-year-old to complete his round alone. Tosti ultimately finished the day with a score of one-over par 72.

According to reports from Golfweek and Yahoo Sports, friction had already developed between Tosti and Ellis earlier in the week during the tournament’s practice rounds. Despite these tensions, Tosti indicated to Golfweek that he was surprised by Ellis’s mid-round departure, initially believing his caddie was taking a bathroom break near the 18th green before realizing Ellis had quit. Tosti later offered a light-hearted perspective on the incident, texting Golfweek to say Ellis ‘couldn’t keep up with eight pars in a row,’ a reference to his strong start of making par on his first 11 holes.

A History of On-Course Temperament

The incident at the Biltmore Championship adds to Alejandro Tosti’s reputation as a golfer with a fiery temperament. He has previously faced issues with both caddies and fellow players during competitions. In 2023, Tosti was suspended during the Korn Ferry Tour playoffs following what were described as ‘expletive-filled outbursts’ directed at players and rules officials, as reported by Golfweek and Yahoo Sports.

Tosti’s past includes repeatedly cursing at his caddie, Ray Yoel, during a Korn Ferry Tour event in 2023, and frequent changes of caddies. He also had a confrontation with Min Woo Lee last year in Houston regarding the Australian’s pace of play. Interestingly, while sources describe Tosti as a ‘Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde type’ and ‘a really kind person’ away from tournaments, he reportedly transforms when competing, a characteristic he himself has acknowledged. He once stated to Golfweek in late 2024 that ‘It’s been the challenge for me my whole life, dealing with myself,’ referring to his struggles with the mental aspect of the game. Earlier this year, he garnered attention at the Valspar Championship by having his caddie wear a bib featuring the phrase ‘Need a wife.’

Navigating the FedEx Cup Fall Amidst Controversy

The Biltmore Championship marks the beginning of the FedEx Cup Fall series, an inaugural event where players compete to improve their standings for the upcoming season. Alejandro Tosti currently holds the 186th position in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, making his performance in these events critical for securing better status.

For professional golfers like Tosti, maintaining composure and a stable working relationship with a caddie is a crucial aspect of competition, especially in high-stakes tournaments. The need for a replacement caddie before his second-round tee time on Friday at 1:49 p.m. ET presents an immediate challenge. This episode underscores the intense pressures within professional golf and how a player’s on-course demeanor can influence not only their performance but also their professional relationships.

Moving forward, all eyes will be on Alejandro Tosti as he continues in the Biltmore Championship and endeavors to secure a new caddie. His performance and temperament throughout the remainder of the tournament will be closely watched, particularly as he navigates the critical FedEx Cup Fall series.
