Apple Unveils New Mac Mini with M6 and M5 Pro Chips

Date:

Apple officially unveiled its new Mac mini desktop computers on August 25, 2026, from Cupertino, California. The updated models feature the all-new M6 and powerful M5 Pro chips, delivering significant advancements in artificial intelligence performance, graphics processing, and overall CPU speed. This launch marks the first refresh for the compact desktop in nearly two years, as previously reported by Bloomberg.

The M6-powered Mac mini introduces a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, both gaining two additional cores compared to the prior generation, according to Apple. WIRED reported that the M6 chip is Apple’s first Silicon part built on 2-nanometer process technology. Apple claims the M6 provides up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster storage and graphics, and 40 percent faster CPU performance compared to the M4. WIRED further noted the M6 is 20 percent faster than the M5 in multithreaded performance.

For professional users, the Mac mini with M5 Pro offers an even greater leap in performance. This model features up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU, designed to manage demanding workflows such as video production, game development, and app creation. Both new Mac mini models support advanced connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and upgraded 2.5Gb Ethernet, with a 10Gb option available.

Enhanced AI Capabilities and Connectivity

The new Mac mini models are specifically engineered for advanced artificial intelligence workloads. The M6 chip includes Neural Accelerators within each GPU core, a feature making its debut on the Mac mini, contributing to the up to 4x faster AI performance. Additionally, the M6 features an all-new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, doubling the peak AI performance compared to its predecessor. Apple’s Chief Hardware Officer, Johny Srouji, stated that the Mac mini has ‘always been our most versatile Mac,’ and with these enhancements, its versatility is expanded further, particularly for ‘always-on agentic computing.’

The M5 Pro model also integrates Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, enabling more advanced AI tasks like photo and video upscaling, and faster execution of large diffusion models. It supports up to 64GB of unified memory with 307GB/s of memory bandwidth, facilitating work with complex 3D scenes, ProRes RAW files, and large local AI models. The device’s efficiency ensures it remains quiet and suitable for continuous operation, whether for AI agents or creative projects.

This increased focus on on-device AI processing in the Mac mini could have global implications, allowing businesses and individuals worldwide to run complex AI models locally rather than relying solely on cloud infrastructure. This shift could enhance data privacy, reduce latency, and potentially lower operational costs for AI-intensive tasks across various industries, from small creative studios to larger enterprises adopting agentic computing workflows. The improved connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 further supports seamless integration into modern network environments.

Availability and Broader Mac Ecosystem Updates

The new Mac mini is available for pre-order starting today, August 25, 2026, with general availability commencing on September 22. According to WIRED, the M6 Mac mini starts at $899 for the model with 16GB of unified memory, representing a $200 price increase. Both models will ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate preinstalled. The refresh comes after reports from WIRED indicated the Mac mini had been difficult to purchase for most of the current year, attributed to a surge in local AI processing demand and an ongoing memory shortage.

Apple also announced significant updates to its Mac Studio desktop, according to WIRED. The Mac Studio will now feature the M5 Max and the new M5 Ultra chips. The M5 Ultra, described as Apple’s most powerful chip ever, utilizes a ‘quad-die’ architecture and an upgraded UltraFusion interconnect to achieve over 4.4 TB per second of inter-die bandwidth. This allows the system to function as a single CPU, with the M5 Ultra Mac Studio featuring a total of 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. The ability to connect multiple Mac Studios via Thunderbolt 5 for running large language models with over a trillion parameters locally was also discussed.

As these new Mac mini models become available, industry observers will be watching how the enhanced AI capabilities and improved performance translate into real-world applications for both everyday users and professional environments. The impact on local AI development and the broader adoption of agentic computing will be key areas to monitor.
