The Astros saw Game 4 of the 2022 World Series as a must-win. They were coming off being routed by the Phillies in Game 3, in which Philadelphia’s bats hit five home runs. Wednesday’s game could not have been more different.
With Cristian Javier — who has been the Astros’ best pitcher over the past two months — leading the charge, the Astros dismantled the Phillies’ offense in a combined no-hit effort, 5-0. Javier went the first six innings before handing the ball to Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly, who finished the job.
ASTROS 5, PHILLIES 0:
It is just the second no-hitter in World Series history, joining Don Larsen’s perfect game for the Yankees in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series. Javier exited Wednesday’s game at 97 pitches, the same amount of pitches it took Larsen to achieve his feat.
HISTORY MADE.
The @astros are only the second team in MLB history to throw a #WorldSeries no-hitter! pic.twitter.com/xFGB6VaCdo
— MLB (@MLB) November 3, 2022
Javier racked up nine strikeouts, including five in a row at one point (one away from teammate Justin Verlander for most consecutive Ks in postseason history), and Astros pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts. Javier’s fastball was the difference-maker in this game; he used it to great effect at the bottom of the strike zone.
This is the second time this season that Javier has started a no-hitter. He went the first seven in a combined no-hitter against the Yankees on June 25.
MORE: Remembering the first no-hitter in World Series history
The Astros’ bats were mostly quiet save for the fifth inning, which is when things went off the rails for Aaron Nola and the Phillies. Three hard Astros hits off Nola loaded the bases with none out. Nola was taken out in favor of Jose Alvarado, who immediately plunked Yordan Alvarez to force in a run. Alex Bregman drove in two more with a double. The Astros went on to score twice more in the frame.
The series will remain in Philadelphia for a pivotal Game 5 on Thursday before Game 6 on Friday in Houston. Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Phillies against Verlander, who is looking to atone for a tough start in Game 1.

Astros vs. Phillies live updates, highlights from 2022 World Series
(Live updates will begin before the game. All times Eastern.)
11:29 p.m. — Hoskins flies out to Tucker in right with Tucker seemingly struggling to pick that ball up. J.T. Realmuto comes up first-pitch swinging and grounds out to Bregman to complete the no-hitter and give the Astros the win! Historic performance from the Astros as they win 5-0 behind the arm of Cristian Javier and the sterling Houston bullpen.
11:27 p.m. — Schwarber works the count full on Pressly and takes ball four to become the first Phillies baserunner since the third. Hoskins now digs in, no-hitter still intact.
11:22 p.m. — Pressly gets Marsh for the first out of the inning via strikeout. It’s Schwarber up next.
11:17 p.m. — Bregman just missed and flies out to left for the third out of the inning. Pressly will look to close out the no-hitter. Not much interest in potentially seeing history from Phillies fans.

11:14 p.m. — Alvarez hits one well to the alley in left-center but it’s tracked down by Marsh for the second out. Bregman, who has the biggest hit of this game so far (excluding Alavardo hitting Alvarez), will step up.
11:12 p.m. — Peña smokes one up the middle past the outstretched glove of Hand and he’s now on for Yordan.
11:10 p.m. — Altuve grounds out to short for the first out of the inning, as Peña steps up. Alvarez is on deck.
11:07 p.m. — Brad Hand now comes in for the Phillies against Altuve.
11:04 p.m. — It looked like Segura might have a hit but it goes right to the Gold Glover Tucker in right for the third out of the inning. That’s eight no-hit innings for Astros pitching.
11:02 p.m. — Montero makes it seven combined strikeouts in a row by getting Bohm. Stott mercifully puts one in play and flies out to McCormick in left field. Two down now.
10:59 p.m. — Dusty Baker is right on schedule, as Rafael Montero takes the mound with Alec Bohm at the plate.
10:57 p.m. — With the last two sides striking out, there have been 23 strikeouts in this game out of 45 outs.
10:55 p.m. — Eflin got Diaz swinging at a curveball, and up steps McCormick. The Phillies bullpen has done a decent job after the disastrous fifth inning, as Eflin also gets McCormick swinging.
10:53 p.m. — Zach Eflin arrives by striking out Vasquez to lead off the eighth, and Diaz is up next.
10:49 p.m. — Pure. Dominance. Abreu strikes out the side and the Astros have held the Phillies hitless through seven.
10:46 p.m. — Abreu had Harper completely off-balance, getting him swinging at two sliders before blowing a 100 mph fastball by him. Castellanos comes up with two outs.
10:43 p.m. — Abreu starts where Javier left off, getting Realmuto waving at a slider. Bryce Harper now steps in.
10:40 p.m. — Javier has been part of one no-hitter so far this year, a combined no-hitter against the Yankees on June 25 in which he threw seven innings. Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly slammed the door in that game.
10:38 p.m. — After Tucker gets on, Gurriel pops out to end the inning. Dusty is going to his bullpen, and Bryan Abreu takes over.
10:34 p.m. — Robertson strikes out Alvarez and gets Bregman to pop out to Stott with Schwarber breathing down Stott’s next. Kyle Tucker now digs in.
10:33 p.m. — David Robertson is now in the game for the Phillies as they continue to go one-and-done with arms. Yordan Alvarez leads off.
10:29 p.m. — Hoskins pulls one to Peña but again the contact is weak. He gets put out at first, and the Phillies are hitless at six. Javier is over 90 pitches so that might do it for him. If so, outstanding start when the Astros needed it most.
10:25 p.m. — Another ground ball, as Schwarber hits into the shift. Rhys Hoskins up next.
10:22 p.m. — Javier induces a ground ball from Marsh to Altuve for the first out of the inning, and it’s the top of the order. Up steps Schwarber.
10:17 p.m. — Now Peña swipes one out to left where it’s caught by Schwarber for the third out. And now the attention turns back to Javier.
10:15 p.m. — Altuve golfs one out to left on the first pitch and Schwarber catches it near the track for the second out. Up next is Peña.
10:14 p.m. — Bellati gets McCormick swinging on a slider to turn the order back to Altuve with one out this time.
10:12 p.m. — Andrew Bellati now takes over for the Phillies after an inauspicious outing for Jose Alvarado. He’ll start out against McCormick, who led off last innings scoring burst.
10:07 p.m. — Segura puts the ball in play at least, plopping a slider into foul territory where it’s caught by Yuli Gurriel. Five no-hit innings for Javier, and the Astros keep their 5-0 lead.
10:04 p.m. — FIVE straight strikeouts for Javier, and he is now one off Justin Verlander’s postseason record for consecutive strikeouts. He’s been unbelievable, and Jean Segura steps up.
10:02 p.m. — Javier continues to roll, as he gets Bohm looking with a pitch that was just a little higher than the previous one. He has four straight strikeouts.
9:57 p.m. — Diaz takes strike three to get Alvarado out of the inning, but a lot of damage was already done. Javier will look to silence the Phillies quickly as he’s done all game in the home half of the inning.
9:55 p.m. — Gurriel now swipes second and it’s 2-2 to Diaz.
9:53 p.m. — Alvarado has his best AB of the game there and gets Vasquez swinging. It’ll be Diaz up next.
9:50 p.m. — Gurriel now joins the party with a shot through the infield, and it’s 5-0 Astros for the third time this series. Great swing by Gurriel to drive in Bregman.
9:48 p.m. — Alvarado finally gets the first out of the inning, but it’s a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Astros 4, Phillies 0 here in the fifth with one out and a runner on third.
9:47 p.m. — And now Bregman takes one the other way for a two-run double. Great piece of hitting there, and still nobody out for Kyle Tucker. Astros have gone up 3-0 here in the fifth.

9:44 p.m. — Not an ideal start for Alvarado! He plunks Alvarez to drive in the first run of the game. And now Bregman is up next.

9:40 p.m. — Peña again laces one into left field but McCormick freezes at third. He loads up the bases with nobody out, and Thomson is out to bring in Jose Alvarado to face Alvarez. Biggest batters of the game are coming up, and they happen to be the Astros’ best.
9:36 p.m. — And now Altuve loops one over Stott’s head into left to advance McCormick to second. Nola is going to have to make some high-pressure pitches again.
9:34 p.m. — McCormick hits one hard to short that gets backhanded nicely by Stott, but he legs it out with ease to get the leadoff man on. Altuve steps up now with nobody out.
9:30 p.m. — Javier strikes out the side as he gets Castellanos to swing through one. He’s looked dominant tonight.
9:28 p.m. — Javier gets Harper in short order and blows a fastball by him. He doesn’t have 100 mph velocity, but his movement on his fastball makes him so hard to hit. Castellanos steps up next.
9:26 p.m. — Javier gets Realmuto for the first out, and Bryce Harper steps up next.
9:21 p.m. — That’s why Vasquez is in the game. He gets a hit, but Aledmys Diaz grounds out to short on the next pitch to get the Phillies out of the inning without more damage.
9:18 p.m. — Gurriel now takes Nola to left center with a pitch on the outer part of the plate, but Marsh makes a nice play to hold him at first. Astros are starting to get a read on Nola this second time through the order.
9:18 p.m. — Tucker once again rips a Nola pitch but this one goes right to Castellanos for the second out of the inning. Kind of a scary pitch for Nola there.
9:15 p.m. — Once again the Astros come up swinging, with Bregman flying out to Marsh to bring up Tucker after just one pitch. Nola is approaching 50 pitches here in the fourth.
9:11 p.m. — Javier again jams up a Phillies hitter, as Hoskins fists one to first base to end the inning via foul-out.
9:09 p.m. — For the second straight inning, a Philly strikes out for the second out while Vasquez gives up a stolen base. Clearly the Phillies are seeing something out of either Javier or Vasquez with Maldonado being sat down for his bat. Hoskins is up with two outs and a runner in scoring position.
9:08 p.m. — Javier is working exceptionally slow. Schwarber steps out of the box down 0-2 after smoking a fastball down the line.
9:05 p.m. — Marsh walks on four pitches to turn the order over, the only two base runners coming via walks. Schwarber now steps up with one out.
9:03 p.m. — After a long at-bat, Jean Segura flies out to center field getting under an elevated fastball. Javier has been living up there and mixing in his slider well. Brandon Marsh up next.
8:57 p.m. — Alvarez goes behind on a fastball and flies out to left field to end the inning. It’s too early to say definitively, but pitching is ruling the day early.
8:56 p.m. — Peña works Nola to a full count but goes down swinging. It’ll be Alvarez up next as we get (further) into the teeth of the Astros order.
8:53 p.m. — Altuve comes up first pitch swinging and grounds out to Bohm at third. It’ll be Jeremy Peña up with the quickness.
8:49 p.m. — Javier saws off Stott and gets him to pop out to short to end the inning. Despite the leadoff runner, not a lot of high-stress pitches that inning.
8:48 p.m. — Bohm swings and misses and Harper steals second on a high throw from Vasquez. Altuve tried to swipe tag him but missed, so the inning lies on Bryson Stott, who has had some great at-bats this series but still no hits.
8:46 p.m. — Harper is getting a huge secondary lead that is obviously getting to Javier, who is even 2-2 with Bohm after missing in the dirt with a slider.
8:44 p.m. — Castellanos strikes out on three pitches, quick work from Javier. Got him slider-slider-slider. Alec Bohm digs in now with one out.
8:42 p.m. — Bryce Harper worked Javier to a full count and draws the walk. He might have caught a break on that 2-2 pitch — particularly considering the second strike — but he’s on to lead off the inning with Nick Castellanos stepping up.
8:37 p.m. — Nola gets out of it! He goes to the curveball three straight times to get McCormick swinging and get out of the inning. Huge inning there for the Phillies pitcher.
HUGE!

8:34 p.m. — Nola gets Diaz swinging with a cutter after three straight curveballs. Just a brutal strikeout, and now the hopes of the second inning rest of Chas McCormick, who takes a bender over the middle to go down 0-1.
8:31 p.m. — Nola plunks Christian Vasquez on his upper arm, and Aledmys Diaz will try to drive in Tucker with the double play in play.
8:28 p.m. — Kyle Tucker continues to give Nola nightmares. After Nola gets up 0-2, Tucker rakes a double into right field to give the Astros a man in scoring position with no outs. Yuli Gurriel follows up by grounding out and Tucker swipes third on the throw over from Bohm.

8:24 p.m. — Javier gets Realmuto swinging with a slider for the third out of the inning. His stuff looks solid early as well.
8:22 p.m. — Hoskins battled for a long time with a few foul balls, but Javier against gets Hoskins to catch it away from the barrel for the second out via popout. J.T. Realmuto now digs in.
8:19 p.m. — Schwarber just missed in a 1-2 count against Javier, catching if off the end of the bat on a lively fastball. The crowd got excited but Schwarber immediately hung his head. Good pitch by Javier ahead in the count with Rhys Hoskins stepping up.
8:15 p.m. — Re: Nola. His last fastball against Peña was 90.4 mph in Game 1. His average in that inning was 95.4 mph. Seems like the rest is doing him well.
8:14 p.m. — The shift makes things hard for the Phillies with two outs, but Jean Segura throws out Bregman on a ground ball right of the bag to get Nola out of the inning. Schwarber coming up next.
8:11 p.m. — Alvarez seemed to be on Nola that entire at-bat, and he finally flips one out to the gap in left-center for a single to bring up Alex Bregman.
8:08 p.m. — And Nola strikes out Peña in short order. Really good-looking stuff from Nola early on.
8:07 p.m. — Altuve tips one off the end of the bat to right-center but it hangs long enough for Brandon Marsh to get to with relative ease. First batter is retired with Jeremy Peña stepping up.
8:04 p.m. — Nola gets things started right by blowing a 95 mph fastball past Altuve, and we’re underway.
8:01 p.m. — Chase Utley and Mac have a catch alongside Jimmy Rollins and Miles Teller.
