Astros vs. Yankees live score, updates, highlights from Game 4 of 2022 ALCS

The Yankees’ season is on the line Sunday as they try to avoid being swept in the ALCS by the juggernaut Astros.

Once again, their season rests on the arm of Nestor Cortes. The left-hander turned in a strong Game 5 start in the ALDS against the Guardians, but the situation is much different this time. The game against Cleveland was win to move on; this game is win fight another day.

The Astros have to be wondering if anyone will challenge them this postseason. They’re 6-0 in the playoffs after sweeping the Mariners in the ALDS and winning the first three games of the ALCS. They’ve looked every bit the No. 1 seed they are. Lance McCullers Jr. will go to the mound for Houston looking to send the Yankees packing.

Can the Yankees’ bats finally wake up? Of the 12 teams who made the postseason, only the Rays have a lower team batting average. The Yankees are batting just .161 as a unit. Aaron Judge (.156 average, two home runs in eight games) exemplifies their struggles. They’ll need to hit if they’re going to take this series to five games, let alone send it back to Houston for a possible Game 6.

Astros vs. Yankees live updates, highlights from ALCS Game 4

(All times Eastern)

9:20 p.m. — Rizzo beats the shift by going the other way with an RBI double that drives in Kiner-Falefa. Great piece of two-strike hitting, and Giancarlo Stanton is up with a chance to do more damage. Yankees 3, Astros 0.

9:17 p.m. — The payoff pitch whizzes by Judge’s helmet to walk him, so Rizzo will come up with runners on first and second and two down.

9:17 p.m. — Despite Judge’s struggles, McCullers is pitching him with a lot of respect. Count is full with two outs as Judge tries to shake out of it.

9:13 p.m. — After the IKF double Jose Trevino fouls out and Harrison Bader softly grounds out to Peña. Two down with a runner on second and Judge at the plate.

9:10 p.m. — The Yankees are playing like, well, their season is on the line. In another two-strike count, Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubles down the right field line to lead off the second.

9:06 p.m. — In his fourth full count of the game, Cortes gets McCormick swinging to get the Yankees out of the inning with nothing but a no-out walk. He’s battling tonight.

9:02 p.m. — Cortes goes sidearm and gets Mancini to softly line out to second for the second out of the inning. Chas McCormick comes up with two down and a runner on first.

9 p.m. — After getting into yet another full count, Cortes walks Kyle Tucker to open the inning. Yuli Gurriel immediately pops out to Kiner-Falefa for the first out.

8:55 p.m. — Cabrera skies one to right field for the third out, so the Astros get out of the inning with two runs allowed on the Stanton and Torres singles. Yankees 2, Astros 0.

8:53 p.m. — Josh Donaldson gets a momentum-killing three-pitch strikeout. Took on the first two and swung on the third. He’s just struggled. Cabrera is up.

8:51 p.m. — For what feels like the first time since Game 4 of the ALDS, the Yankees get some luck on a bloop single from Gleyber Torres into the right center Bermuda Triangle. Rizzo comes in from third and Stanton barely gets to second in time. 2-0 Yankees early.

8:49 p.m. — Stanton has the Yankees on the board with a single the other way to drive in Bader and get Rizzo to third. He got into a 3-1 count and took the third straight slider of the at-bat to right. Great start here for the Yankees after the delay.

8:48 p.m. — Yankees could have something brewing here in the first, as Anthony Rizzo is hit by a pitch. Giancarlo Stanton comes up and gets into a hitter’s count.

8:45 p.m. — Right on cue, Bader gets things rolling by yanking a McCullers 0-2 slider to center for a hit. Judge, meanwhile, flies out next for the first out.

8:44 p.m. — Harrison Bader will lead things off for the Yankees against Lance McCullers Jr. He’s been a bright spot for the Yankees this postseason.

8:40 p.m. — Another long at-bat for Alvarez ends in a fly ball to left field, so there are two down with Bregman stepping up and Peña on first. Bregman comes up first-pitch swinging and pops out to short. A 20-pitch first in which Cortes only faced four batters.

8:37 p.m. — In another full count, Jeremy Peña singles to left off of Cortes. Runner on for Yordan Alvarez.

8:34 p.m. — Altuve takes strike three after working Cortes into a full count. Ball looked off the plate, but that’s part of Cortes’ game. One down in the first.

8:32 p.m. — We’re finally underway in New York, as Cortes starts Altuve off with a pair of balls off the plate.

8:27 p.m. — And the Astros, who will bat first.

8:25 p.m. — Players are on the field and the first pitch has been thrown, so it looks like we’re on pace for the projected 8:30 start! Here’s a look at the home lineup.

7:15 p.m. — Obviously no updates from this game yet, as it’s presently under a weather delay until further notice. Officials are meeting and MLB will give updates in due time, per MLB Comms.
