If Diego Simeone is searching for ways to invigorate Atletico Madrid following their defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, the chance to end Real Madrid’s unbeaten start to the season and move within striking distance of the top of the La Liga table should help.
Atleti were on course for a useful fourth point from two games in their Champions League campaign until the 84th minute at Leverkusen, when Robert Andrich put the Bundesliga side ahead three minutes before Moussa Diaby sealed their victory.
Madrid also left it late, Federico Valverde making the breakthrough with 10 minutes remaining at home to RB Leipzig. Marco Asensio added a second in added time.
