Goals from Rodrygo and Fede Valverde extended Real Madrid’s 100% start to the season as the Spanish champions won 2-1 against Atletico Madrid.
Pre-match discussion focused on racist abuse directed at Vinicius Junior this week and there were reports of more racism towards the Brazilian winger outside the Metropolitano Stadium before kick-off.
The home team started strongly and could have opened the scoring when Felipe got on the end of a Rodrigo de Paul freekick into the box. However, the Atleti defender could only head over the bar.
Real Madrid converted their first opportunity of the match when Rodrygo finished on the half-volley after being set up by Aurelien Tchoumeni who picked out the Brazilian with a stunning chipped pass

And the visitors doubled their advantage after 36 minutes with Fede Valverde scoring for the third straight match, finishing on the rebound from a tight angle after a surging run by Vinicius into the box.
Mario Hermoso came off the bench to give Atleti a lifeline following a mistake by Thibaut Courtois, but the defender was shown two yellow cards as the hosts finished the match with 10 men.
Rodrygo adapting well
Karim Benzema’s injury had the potential to derail Real Madrid such is the importance of the French striker to the Spanish and European champions, but Rodrygo has adapted well to his new position at the head of the attack.

— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) September 18, 2022
Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real Madrid with a well-timed half-volley and gave his team an outlet throughout the derby. The Brazilian is a very different frontman to Benzema, but he has now scored in three successive matches.
Tchouameni continues to shine
Real Madrid’s decision to let Casemiro leave the club in the summer transfer window looks increasingly shrewd given the performances produced by Tchouameni. The 22-year-old has been a driving force for Los Blancos since arriving from Monaco and it was no different in the Madrid derby.

Tchouameni’s pass cut open the Atletico Madrid defence for the opening goal. He made sure the home team rarely got a grip of the match in the centre of the pitch and was very effective at starting attacking moves from deep. The young Frenchman could be a key figure at the Santiago Bernabeu for a long time to come.
Griezmann fails to take chance
Griezmann was handed his first start of the season for the Madrid derby, but the French forward failed to make much of an impression on the match. This won’t persuade Diego Simeone to keep Griezmann in the team after the international break.

The contract situation Griezmann currently finds himself in is a bizarre one, with Atleti obligated to pay Barcelona €40m if the attacker plays more than 45 minutes in a set number of matches this season. It might be some time until Griezmann gets another chance from the start.

82 mins: Real Madrid sub: Modric OFF, Camavinga ON
81 mins: Atletico Madrid sub: Kondogbia OFF, Saul ON
80 mins: Time is running out for Atletico Madrid if they are to mount any sort of late fightback. There’s just 10 minutes left on the clock and Real Madrid are holding firm.
77 mins: It looks like Rudiger will play at left back for the final 15 minutes of this match. Some might have expected Alaba to move over to the left side of the defence, but it’s the German international who is playing in that position after coming off the bench.
75 mins: Real Madrid sub: Mendy OFF, Rudiger ON
73 mins: Simeone is throwing everything he’s got at this now. The problem for Atletico Madrid is that they are very open at the back and that could play into Real Madrid’s hands – they are one of the best counter-attacking teams around.
72 mins: Atletico Madrid subs: Carrasco and Koke OFF, Correa and Hermoso ON
69 mins: Rodrygo has been excellent for Real Madrid. The Brazilian winger is playing a slightly unusual role through the middle due to Benzema’s absence, but he has given his team everything they have needed to edge the derby so far.
67 mins: Real Madrid are now looking to keep control of possession for a period of the match. They know they don’t need to push the matter too hard. They have a two-goal lead and it’s up to Atletico Madrid to press them and mount a late comeback.
64 mins: BOOKING – Koke (Atletico Madrid). The Atleti midfielder cleans out Rodrygo on the break and that’s a yellow card.
63 mins: Those are two attacking changes by Simeone, and notably Griezmann has stayed on the pitch beyond the hour mark. Cunha and Morata will give Atletico Madrid options in the final third of the pitch, but can they get their team back into the match?
62 mins: Atletico Madrid subs – de Paul and Felix OFF, Cunha and Morata ON
60 mins: Atletico Madrid have been more aggressive in their pressing since half time, but Real Madrid are doing a good job of playing through the press.
57 mins: Griezmann tries to turn Militao after receiving a pass into feet inside the Real Madrid penalty area, but the cross is far too close to Courtois. Nothing is really happening for Atletico Madrid in the final third of the pitch.
55 mins: The match is in a bit of a lull at the moment. Of course, this suits Real Madrid who are comfortable sitting back and protecting their 2-0 lead, but Atletico Madrid need to do more to create space and play through the away team.
51 mins: Reinildo is playing on the edge here. The Atletico Madrid defender is playing on a yellow card and he could have been shown a second one for fouling Valverde. Surely Simeone is thinking about taking him off for his own good!
50 mins: VAR check! The officials are taking a quick look at a potential handball inside the Real Madrid box, but it struck Witsel’s arm and play continues.
48 mins: Atletico Madrid have seen plenty of the ball in the derby, but that has played into Real Madrid’s hands. They have been devastating in quick transition. Can the home team make more of their possession in this second period?
46 mins: The second half is under way! Atletico Madrid need a comeback in this second period.
45+2 mins: HALF TIME! Atletico Madrid 0-2 Real Madrid – Simeone will feel hard done by, but Real Madrid have taken their opportunities through Rodrygo and Valverde. Atleti need to improve in the second half to stand any chance of rescuing this match.
45 mins: There will be two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half.
42 mins: A long pass over the top looked to have released Rodrygo in behind, but Felipe came across at pace to rescue the situation for Atletico Madrid. It feels like Real Madrid are just one pass away from being through on goal again in this match.
40 mins: Courtois save! Carrasco twists one way and then the other way inside the box, he shoots at the near post, but Courtois stood up tall and made the save with his legs!
38 mins: Valverde is in the form of his life at the moment. He can’t stop scoring goals! He has raised his game this season. Valverde offers Real Madrid so much in terms of his energy and drive.
36 mins: GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0 Real Madrid 2 (36′ Valverde) – Real Madrid double their lead! Vinicius was released in behind the Atletico Madrid defence, he prodded a finish off the inside of the post and Valverde follows it up to finish from a tight angle on the rebound!
There’s just no stopping @RealMadridEN right now!

35 mins: Atletico Madrid have lost their way since conceding the first goal of the match. They were on top and looked dangerous until Rodrygo found the back of the net for the away team. Now, everything is laboured in the final third of the pitch.
32 mins: BOOKING – Mendy (Real Madrid). Now Mendy enters the referee’s book for a foul on Llorente.
30 mins: Looking at the replays of that tackle by Reinaldo on Rodrygo, the Atletico Madrid defender was fortunate not to be shown a red card. His studs were up and that could have done some serious damage to the Brazilian winger.
28 mins: BOOKING – Reinaldo (Atletico Madrid). The first yellow card of the match is shown to Reinaldo for fouling Rodrygo.
26 mins: Shot by Griezmann! The Atletico Madrid attacker muscles Vinicius away from the ball as he dribbles to the edge of the box, his shot is a good one, but Courtois makes the diving save!
25 mins: Real Madrid’s capacity for soaking up pressure, and even riding their luck, and then striking with a goal of their own is remarkable. They do it so frequently that it can’t be luck. Atletico Madrid will feel aggrieve that they are losing this match.
22 mins: More reports of a toxic atmosphere inside the Metropolitano…
Metropolitano stadium announcer calls for respect for all the players on the pitch – hard to hear the msg inside the stadium with all the whistles from the crowd.

18 mins: GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0 Real Madrid 1 (18′ Rodrygo) – Real Madrid score the first goal of the derby against the run of play! Tchouameni clips a wonderful pass over the top of the Atleti defence and Rodrygo makes the run to finish on the bounce! Excellent finish!

17 mins: KONDOGBIA… wide! The space opened up for Kondogbia 25 yards out from goal, he wound up the strike and let fly, but the ball flashed wide of the post! That was a ferocious effort by the Atleti midfielder!
15 mins: Atletico Madrid have started the better of the two teams. They are pressing for an opener, but they need to make this period of pressure count otherwise Real Madrid will come back into the contest.
12 mins: Into the side netting! A line-breaking pass is played through to Carrasco who stands up Carvajal and gets the shot away from a tight angle, but the Atletico Madrid winger could only find the side netting.
10 mins: There are loud whistles every time Vinicius touches the ball. There are reports of racist abuse being directed at the Brazilian winger who was criticised this week by a prominent agent for celebrating scoring goals by dancing.
9 mins: Simeone really has spanned an era as Atletico Madrid manager…

4 mins: We’re only four minutes into the derby and Simeone has already been spoken to by the referee. It’s been a fiery start to the match!
3 mins: Rodrygo is playing as the centre forward for Real Madrid this evening, but the Brazilian is a winger by trade and will have the freedom to drift out to the wide areas. Vinicius will have space to drive into, centrally.
1 min: The match is under way! It’s the Madrid derby! Atletico Madrid are in red and white while Real Madrid are in all-white.
5 mins to KO: Not long until kick off at the Metropolitano. This is the first Madrid derby of the season. We will learn a lot about both teams this evening. Who will turn up? Which side will be able to play their natural game? How will Real Madrid cope without Benzema?

15 mins to KO: If Atletico Madrid lose tonight, they will be eight points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga table. That would be a big gap for Simeone’s team to make up. They need three points, or a draw at the very least, to keep them within touching distance of their rivals.
30 mins to KO: 2022 has been a challenging year for Simeone. He has faced criticism from his own fans, but there’s no doubting Atletico Madrid is a club that reflects his personality. His derby record is historically good for an Atleti manager!
10 – Under Diego Simeone 🇦🇷, Atlético de Madrid have won 10 of their 36 derbies against Real Madrid in all competitions (D13 L13), as many wins as in their previous 66 meetings with Los Blancos before his arrival (W10 D16 L40). Rivalry. pic.twitter.com/Mr3ABA2JHa

45 mins to KO: Atletico Madrid suffered a damaging defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League during the week, but they look stronger for this match. Oblak is back, for starters. Grbic had looked shaky in the matches he had played for Atleti recently.
60 mins to KO: Real Madrid are the only team in Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues to have a 100% record at this stage of the season. Ancelotti’s team come into this match on the back of a Champions League win over RB Leipzig during the week. They are in good shape.
75 mins to KO: Atletico Madrid XI – Oblak – Llorente, Felipe, Witsel, Reinildo, Carrasco – Kondogbia, Koke, De Paul – Joao Felix, Griezmann
Griezmann starts! It’s the French forward’s first start of the season due to the bizarre contract situation he has at Atletico Madrid.
