A 52-year-old Inkster man who hid in a portable toilet after being suspected of robbing a Dearborn, Michigan bank was sentenced this week to seven years in prison.
Charles Woolery, 52, was arrested March 2 for robbing Dearborn Federal Savings Bank. He faced a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for bank robbery.
“Today’s sentence appropriately takes this defendant’s long criminal history into account,” U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison said Jan. 17. “Our office stands ready to prosecute individuals who use violence or threats of violence to threaten our community.”
At the time of his arrest, he was found hiding in a port-a-potty.
“This case shows that violent criminals can run, but they can’t hide no matter where they may go,” Ison said. “The federal authorities appreciate the assistance and partnership of the Dearborn Police Department.”
The bank teller told police that Woolery walked up to the window and gestured to his hip, implying he had a weapon.
He handed her a note that said: “Smile. Put all $10-$20-$50-$100 in a bag no dye pack, no GPS, do not hit alarm til I leave or I will kill everyone.”
The teller, fearing for her safety, placed $1,690 in a black bag and handed it to Woolery. Woolery then fled the bank on foot and was later arrested by Dearborn police officers, without incident, in a port-a-pott in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue.
Officers found the $1,690 in the front of a Lions’ hoodie that Woolery was wearing. Officers also found the black beanie hat, black face mask, the robbery note, a full tan Carhartt-style suit, and tan gloves like those used in the bank robbery in the portable toilet where Woolery was found hiding.
