Barcelona are hoping to return to prominence in Europe as their 2022/23 UEFA Champions League journey begins.
The Spanish giants were left red-faced last season after their exit at the group stage from the competition. That consigned the Blaugrana to their Europa League debut, where they were beaten by eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.
Such an uncharacteristic season of failure has led to a massive summer overhaul at the Camp Nou, with Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Franck Kessie, Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen joining the club, along with a new contract for Ousmane Dembele.
Barcelona are still mired in a financial crisis, but have somehow managed to work the books enough to make room for those new arrivals.
A revival is now a requirement, as the club hasn’t reached the Champions League final since last hoisting the trophy in 2015. They have also only reached the semifinals once (2019) in that span.

Barcelona were drawn in Group C and will face Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen.

Bayern Munich
Bayern destroyed Barcelona 8-2 at the quarterfinal stage in 2019/20 and won 3-0 home and away in last season’s group stages.
Robert Lewandowski, who scored twice in the victory at Camp Nou last term, will line up for the Catalans against his old club.
Inter Milan
Jose Mourinho’s Inter battled past Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona before beating Bayern in the final in 2009/10. The Nerazzurri, eliminated at the last-16 stage by Liverpool last term, were beaten 2-1 by Barca home and away in the group stages of the competition in 2019/20.
Viktoria Plzen
Plzen defeated Qarabag in the playoff round to reach the group stage this season. The last time they played in the Champions League proper was 2018/19, when they lost twice to Real Madrid but only narrowly missed out on progressing to the knockouts after beating Roma.

Barcelona history in the Champions League
The Catalan club has won the Champions League five times previously, with their last victory coming in 2015.
Last year’s group-stage exit was a disaster for a club of Barcelona’s stature, leading to their summer transfer overhaul. They will now target another deep run in the Champions League, having last reached the semifinals back in 2018/19.
Barcelona haven’t reached the final since winning the competition in 2015.
