Bears vs. Patriots live score, updates, highlights from NFL ‘Monday Night Football’ game

Mac is back, just in time for “Monday Night Football.” 

Quarterback Mac Jones will make his return from a high ankle sprain tonight as the Patriots take on the Bears in primetime. 

Rumors swirled this week of a possible QB controversy in New England after the impressive play of Bailey Zappe over the last few games. The rookie was unexpectedly thrust into action in Week 4 against Green Bay with both Jones and Brian Hoyer injured. The Patriots lost that game to the Packers, but Zappe went toe-to-toe with reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers before falling just short in overtime. 

Zappe then led New England to back-to-back dominating wins over the Lions and Browns. In those two games, he posted a 72.9 completion percentage, a 111.4 passer rating and four touchdowns to just one interception. 

But after refusing to commit to starting one or the other throughout the week, Bill Belichick finally gave Jones the nod on Monday. It will be his first start since Week 3, when he suffered the injury to his ankle. 

We’ll see if Jones can match Zappe’s recent success to help keep New England’s winning streak alive.

Meanwhile, the Bears’ offensive woes this season show no sign of letting up. Last time out, they managed only a touchdown in a hideous home loss to the Commanders.

Quarterback Justin Fields continues to struggle, although in fairness he isn’t exactly surrounded by high-level talent, in particular Chicago’s offensive line and receiving corps. Nevertheless, Fields has to shoulder some of the blame after three losses in a row have dropped the team to 2-4.

That hasn’t stopped Belichick from talking up the Bears. He spent no less than seven minutes discussing the team’s strengths in his weekly press conference.

Will the Patriots ride their momentum to a third straight win? Or will the Bears pull off the upset on the road?

9:17 p.m. INTERCEPTION — What a HUGE momentum swing! Fields looks to pass on 3rd and 5, but it’s tipped my Judon and falls right into the arms of Myles Bryant! It’s New England’s ball at midfield.

9:15 p.m. — Fields starts the Bears’ drive with a scramble for 15 yards. He’s always a threat to make plays with his legs.

9:12 p.m. — We may have just seen a changing of the guard in New England. Zappe seized his opportunity right away with a perfect touchdown drive. Is this the end of Mac Jones’ time as starter?

Bears 10, Patriots 7

9:09 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — WOW. THE LEGEND OF ZAPPE KEEPS ON GROWING. On the ensuing play, he goes deep left to a WIDE open Jakobi Meyers. Meyers stumbles, but he wasn’t touched so he gets up and lunges into the end zone for a touchdown! How about that!

9:07 p.m. — He’s off to a good start. After completing his first throw to Jonnu Smith for a short gain, he finds Stevenson open on 3rd and 5 for a big gain. The Patriots have it at Chicago’s 30-yard line.

9:05 p.m. — And right on cue, here’s Zappe getting ready to enter the game. A loud cheer goes up as the rookie from Western Kentucky takes the field. 

9:03 p.m. — Two incompletions by Fields bring up a quick 3rd and 10. He rolls right and looks desperately downfield for someone to throw to, but there’s nobody home and Matthew Judon wraps him up for a sack. The Bears can’t take advantage of the turnover and will have to punt.

9:02 p.m. — Not the greatest start for Mac Jones tonight. You have to wonder if we’ll see Zappe at some point…

8:59 p.m. INTERCEPTION — I guess Brisker isn’t hurt too bad! The rookie returns to the field and makes a great play to pick off Jones, whose throw to Jonnu Smith sailed just a tad. It allowed Brisker to jump in front of the receiver, and he made a beautiful catch to hang on for the interception.

8:57 p.m. — On 3rd and 1, Stevenson takes the handoff and just barely makes the line to gain. That looked like a pretty favorable spot by the officials, but nevertheless the drive stays alive. 

8:55 p.m. — Another injury for Chicago. This time it’s rookie safety Jaquan Brisker. More bad news for Bears fans. This one doesn’t look too bad, thankfully. 

8:54 p.m. — Jones hasn’t aired it out much yet tonight, but somewhat surprisingly he’s been pretty good on the ground. He just picked up 8 more yards on a QB keeper. 

8:52 p.m. — By the way, Bears offensive lineman Lucas Patrick was just carted to the locker room. Tough blow for Chicago.

End of first quarter: Bears 10, Patriots 0

8:51 p.m. — Jones completes it to Hunter Henry for another 1st down gain, and that will take us to the end of the quarter.

8:49 p.m. — A Stevenson run sets up 3rd and 5. Jones drops back, then tucks and runs for a gain of 10 to move the chains. His ankle looks alright so far.

8:48 p.m. — On 1st down, Jones heaves it down the left sideline to Tyquan Thornton. The receiver had a step on his man, but the pass was just slightly overthrown. 

8:45 p.m. — Where was this last week? That was a really impressive drive by Chicago and they’re out to an early double-digit lead. Fields looks composed and decisive so far.  

Bears 10, Patriots 0

8:43 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — After Montgomery powers for a tough 8-yard run, Fields takes the snap on 2nd down and dives into the end zone for the score! What a start for the Bears’ offense!

8:42 p.m. — N’Keal Harry makes a catch for 14 more yards to move Chicago into the red zone, then Fields keeps it and runs down to near the 10-yard line.

8:39 p.m. — A screen pass to tight end Cole Kmet gets 6 yards on 1st down, but Montgomery is bottled up on 2nd. On 3rd and 6, Fields escapes the pocket and finds St. Brown open downfield for another big gain. The Bears have it at the Patriots’ 33-yard line now. 

8:36 p.m. — Jones just hands it off to Stevenson, who gets 6 yards but that’s not enough. Another three-and-out sparks loud boos already from the fans in Foxborough. 

8:34 p.m. — Patriots offensive lineman Trent Brown has had a horrendous start tonight. In just over 8 minutes of game time, he’s already been called for three penalties. His latest flag, a false start, sets up 3rd and 10 for New England.

Bears 3, Patriots 0

8:28 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Montgomery rumbles for a gain of 9 on 3rd down, but he’s still a ways short. Matt Eberflus sends on the field goal unit, and Cairo Santos connects from 42 yards to give Chicago an early lead.

8:26 p.m. — Fields follows that up with another completion to Equanimeous St. Brown for 11 more yards. But two plays later, a pitch to Montgomery slips through his hands and he’s forced to pounce on the live ball to avoid a turnover. That’ll set up 3rd and 14. 

8:24 p.m. — The Bears’ offense begins its night with two handoffs to David Montgomery to set up 3rd and 4. Fields takes the snap, drops back and tosses right to a wide open Darnell Mooney, who pushes ahead for a nice gain of 20 yards.

8:19 p.m. — Rhamondre Stevenson runs for no gain on the first play from scrimmage, then makes a catch but loses a yard on 2nd down. On 3rd and 11, Jones tests his ankle with a scramble up the middle but he slides down well short of the marker. New England starts with a quick three-and-out.

8:15 p.m. — Chicago won the coin toss and chose to defer. The Patriots chose to receive first, so Mac Jones and the New England offense will get the ball to start the game. Kickoff is moments away from Gillette Stadium

8:05 p.m. — It’s a cool, foggy night in New England. Temperatures will hover in the high 50s Fahrenheit throughout this game. Rain isn’t in the forecast, but don’t rule out a quick shower either.

7:56 p.m. — In case you missed it, former president (and Bears fan) Barack Obama will be joining Peyton and Eli on tonight’s “Manningcast” along with Bill Burr and Vince Vaughn. Wonder what he’ll have to say about his team…

7:50 p.m. — Bailey Zappe will serve as the Patriots’ backup QB tonight after starting the last two weeks — and going 2-0 in the process.

7:44 p.m. — Jones isn’t the only young QB looking to make a statement tonight. Justin Fields is trying to get back on track with a road win after a rough start to the season. 

7:28 p.m. — It’s the return of the Mac. Mac Jones is warming up in Foxborough as he prepares to make his return from a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 3.

The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. Pregame coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET with “Monday Night Countdown.” Joe Buck (play-by-play), Troy Aikman (color commentary) and Lisa Salters (sideline reporter) will be on the call from Foxborough.

And after a two-week hiatus, the “Monday Night With Peyton and Eli” alternate broadcast is back on ESPN2.
