Bills OC Ken Dorsey has epic meltdown in coaching booth, slams headset and playbook after chaotic ending, loss to Dolphins

Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey perfectly captured the emotions of Buffalo fans everywhere on Sunday following a wild ending in the Buffalo-Miami game, which resulted in a 21-19 Dolphins win.

But if one were to just see the box score of the game, it doesn’t truly capture the chaos that handed the Super Bowl favorite Bills their first loss of the season and an ending that drew this meltdown from OC Ken Dorsey.

So, what drew that epic reaction from Dorsey?

Let’s dive in.

Buffalo seemed prime for a go-ahead touchdown on the game’s final drive with the clock inching closer to 0:00. The Bills got the ball with 1:27 remaining on the clock following a safety in which Miami’s Thomas Morstead punted the ball straight into his blocker’s backside.

The special teams miscue, dubbed the “Butt Punt”, followed a goal-line stand by the Miami defense as well. Morstead made up for the play with a 74-yard boomer on the ensuing punt, with Buffalo taking over at its own 40-yard line following a 17-yard return.

The Bills appeared ready to drive deeper into Dolphins territory, facing second-and-10 at the Dolphins 40-yard line with 22 seconds remaining. But an untimely holding penalty on David Quessenberry resulted in a 10-yard penalty, moving Buffalo back to its own 47.

That set up this play, which somehow ended with the Bills running out of time after a heads-up play by Josh Allen. He escaped pressure by Jevon Holland and Jaelan Phillips and hit the underneath route to running back Isaiah McKenzie.

Unfortunately for the Bills, McKenzie was brought down inside the lines with 7 seconds remaining. Buffalo was unable to get back to the line of scrimmage in time, resulting in the final 21-19 score:

Allen was clearly frustrated as he slammed his helmet to the ground. But that’s nothing compared to Dorsey, who took out his frustrations the way many Bills fans likely did on Sunday:

An understandable reaction for the first-year offensive coordinator, who has served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator since 2019. It’s the Bills’ first loss in this series in eight games, dating back to December 2018.

The Bills were able to move the ball mostly at will on Sunday, out-gaining the Dolphins 497-212. But Buffalo also had a missed field goal, fumble recovery and the turnover on downs, leaving several points on the field at Hard Rock Stadium.

Allen also out-performed his Miami counterpart Tua Tagovailoa, who appeared to suffer a concussion yet still was allowed to return to play in the second half. Allen completed 42 of 63 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns; Tagovailoa completed 13 of 18 for 187 yards and a score.

In all, it was a wild ending to a wild game — with a completely rational response from Dorsey, all things considered.
