Brandin Cooks vents about getting stuck with Texans after trade deadline: ‘I want to win’

Brandin Cooks is not happy.

The Texans wideout had been tipped with a move away from NRG Stadium during the trade deadline, particularly with Houston in the midst of another campaign filled with losses. That didn’t happen, though. And Cooks has made it clear he’s not too pleased with the direction the Texans are going in at the moment.

“For me personally, I just at the end of the day want to win and compete now,” Cooks said. “That’s been my thought process.”

Cooks has been a part of winning teams in the past, most notably the Drew Brees-led Saints of the mid-2010s. This year’s Texans team, sitting at just 1-6-1 through its opening eight games, seem destined for another Top-5 pick. For Cooks, a 29 year-old approaching the twilight of his career, that’s just not going to work.

Cooks posted a cryptic tweet after last week’s trade deadline passed, one that seemingly showcased his displeasure with remaining in Houston:

Cooks failed to elaborate on exactly why he felt so aggrieved. However, he did seem to indicate that it has more to do with on-field play.

“I was frustrated, absolutely. I want to win, that’s not the case,” Cooks said. “That’s what’s going on. That’s the way I expressed my emotion. I think we all want to win. We’re all frustrated in some sense. … That’s some of it, but like I said, as far as going into depth, I’m going to keep that internal.”

Cooks is the Texans’ leading receiver this year, having racked up 354 yards and 32 catches on the season. He’s slated to make $18 million next year, a price tag that seemingly warded off other teams from making inquiries for the nine-year veteran.

“How I’m feeling right now, take it day by day process,” Cooks said. “I’m here now, for the time being, and as far as everything else getting worked out, we will keep that internal.”
