Brazil arguably put forth the best performance of the tournament in a 2-0 win over Serbia, showing just why they’re the favorites to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But it won’t be all smooth sailing for the Selecao when they face Group G joint leaders Switzerland in their next match.
The ankle injury that Neymar picked up against Serbia is serious enough to potentially rule him out of the entire group phase and it remains to be seen what Brazil’s vaunted attack will look like without him. It’s already missing one starter (Danilo), and a flu bug could wreak more havoc.
Meanwhile, Switzerland are an established side with steady performances from match to match. They were far from world-beaters in a 1-0 win against Cameroon, but the Swiss are effective and simply get the job done.
They’ve presented issues to Brazil in the past, including a 1-1 draw in the 2018 World Cup group stage that featured several of the projected starters on Monday. Brazil’s all-time record against the Swiss is a modest 3W-2L-4D.
After Serbia and Cameroon shared an extravagantly entertaining 3-3 draw, the winner of Brazil vs. Switzerland stands to clinch a berth in the Round of 16.

Brazil vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup
3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Want a potential matchwinner? Breel Embolo has scored in three of his last four matches for Switzerland, netting the winner in each game – including against Cameroon.
4 hrs from kickoff: Since his first World Cup in 2014, Neymar has been fouled 53 times in the competition – at least 11 more than any other player. Little wonder he picks up injuries.
4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: We’ll see how Brazil play against Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri, and whether the danger he presents will force left-back Alex Sandro to do more defending and less attacking down Brazil’s left side. Their attacks down the right with Eder Militao playing at right-back should also be down given his defense-first tendencies.
50% – Xherdan Shaqiri has been directly involved in exactly half of Switzerland’s 24 goals across their last four appearances at major tournaments (EUROS + World Cup), scoring eight goals and assisting a further four. Key. #SUICMR #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/ZmD5rb8KaW

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Swiss manager Murat Yakin was asked about Brazil’s two absences and he reminded everyone that Brazil have so many world-class players they could field three teams. (You’d need 33 players on the roster instead of 26 to have three teams, but you get his point.)
“Grandes jogadores pra formar três equipes!” 😎

5 hrs from kickoff: Another reason that regular center-back Eder Militao is the favorite over Dani Alves to take over at right-back from the injured Danilo? The far post ball into the box that Switzerland love to deliver through Xherdan Shaqiri’s magical left foot.
Former Brazil international Filipe Luis explains how many of Switzerland’s goals in recent years come on headers at that far post on balls delivered by Shaqiri. Dani Alves would be at a definite disadvantage for aerial defending. Watch Filipe Luis explain it here (in Portuguese but visuals are clear):

Brazil vs. Switzerland lineups, team news
Brazil manager Tite will have to do without Neymar (right ankle ligaments) and right-back Danilo (ankle sprain), though he’s adamant both will play again during this World Cup.
Lucas Paqueta is expected to move into Neymar’s attacking mid role with Fred entering the picture alongside Man United teammate Casemiro in central midfield. Also, the consensus among Brazilian media outlets is that center-back Eder Militao will take over at right-back instead of Dani Alves.
One issue to monitor: GOAL is reporting that a flu-like bug has infiltrated the Brazil camp with the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Alisson, and Antony all impacted and unable to train regularly in the lead-up. No word yet on whether that will affect their availability against Switzerland.
Brazil (4-3-3, right to left): 1-Alisson (GK) — 14-Eder Militao, 4-Marquinhos, 3-Thiago Silva, 6-Alex Sandro — 8-Fred, 5-Casemiro, 7-Lucas Paqueta — 11-Raphinha, 9-Richarlison, 20-Vinicius Jr.
Reports indicate that RB Salzburg forward Noah Okafor, who’s an attacking option off the bench for Switzerland, will not be available for the match due to a quad injury. Otherwise, the same lineup that played Cameroon is expected to take the field against Brazil.
Switzerland (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1-Yann Sommer (GK) — 3-Silvan Widmer, 5-Manuel Akanji, 4-Nico Elvedi, 13-Ricardo Rodriguez — 8-Remo Freuler, 10-Granit Xhaka — 23-Xherdan Shaqiri, 15-Djibril Sow, 17-Ruben Vargas — 7-Breel Embolo
