Brazil vs. Switzerland live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group G match as Sommer saves from Vinicius Junior

Brazil arguably put forth the best performance of the tournament in a 2-0 win over Serbia, showing just why they’re the favorites to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But it won’t be all smooth sailing for the Selecao when they face Group G joint leaders Switzerland in their next match.

The ankle injury that Neymar picked up against Serbia is serious enough to potentially rule him out of the entire group phase and it remains to be seen what Brazil’s vaunted attack will look like without him. It’s already missing one starter (Danilo), and a flu bug could wreak more havoc.

Meanwhile, Switzerland are an established side with steady performances from match to match. They were far from world-beaters in a 1-0 win against Cameroon, but the Swiss are effective and simply get the job done.

They’ve presented issues to Brazil in the past, including a 1-1 draw in the 2018 World Cup group stage that featured several of the projected starters on Monday. Brazil’s all-time record against the Swiss is a modest 3W-2L-4D.

After Serbia and Cameroon shared an extravagantly entertaining 3-3 draw, the winner of Brazil vs. Switzerland stands to clinch a berth in the Round of 16.

Brazil vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

44 mins: The last man to win the World Cup for Brazil is in the house…

(US only)

43 mins: Brazil have had the lion’s share of possession in the last 15 minutes or so, but Switzerland still look relatively untroubled at the back. How long will things stay that way?

39 mins: That’s a better cross for Switzerland, Ricardo Rodriguez getting into space down the left and picking out Ruben Vargas in the area. A clever turn nearly takes him away from Thiago Silva, but Brazil have bodies back and he’s crowded out.

37 mins: There’s a definite feeling Brazil are working up a bit of a head of steam. Alex Sandro and Vinicius Junior link up down the left, the latter playing a square pass for Eder Militao, whose shot loops behind.

34 mins: Switzerland are trying to keep possession at the moment, breaking up the tempo Brazil were just starting to build.

31 mins: Raphinha has perked up here, coming in off the flank and swapping passes with Eder Militao before trying his luck from 25m. The shot is straight at Yann Sommer but that’s more positive from Brazil.

27 mins: Big chance for Brazil! Raphinha’s been quiet so far but you can’t afford to give him that amount of space, the Barcelona winger looking up on the right flank and drifting in a perfect cross to Vincius Junior at the far post. The winger has plenty of space but can’t make proper contact, the ball bouncing off his shin, although Yann Sommer still needs to save at this near post.

(US only)

25 mins: Good spell of possession for Switzerland but their crossing hasn’t been on the mark so far and Djibril Sow is the latest to fall short, Thiago Silva easily cutting out the ball into the box.

22 mins: We’re light on goalmouth incident at the halfway point of this first period, but hopefully that first goal is just around the corner…

19 mins: This isn’t far away though, Lucas Paqueta working enough space down the left to fire in a low cross which Richarlison is just beaten to by Manuel Akanji.

18 mins: With Neymar absent, Brazil have lacked someone to pick the ball up and drive at the defence. Switzerland have kept their shape with little difficulty so far.

15 mins: Casemiro trips Breel Embolo and Switzerland have a freekick 35m from goal in a central position. Remo Freuler and Granit Xhaka are over it, opting to lay the ball wide for Ruben Vargas, whose cross is cleared.

13 mins: There’s a bit of magic from Lucas Paqueta, sending Richarlison away for the first time. The Spurs striker breaks down the right but there’s a lack of numbers in the box and his ball towards Vinicius Junior is cut out.

And then Casemiro and Fred combine to play in Richarlison, whose touch is too heavy and the ball bobbles behind.

10 mins: It’s been a confident start by Switzerland, although Brazil look like they’re biding their time. Richarlison nearly catches them out as he bursts into life, but the pass towards him is cut out.

6 mins: Switzerland have had a bit of joy in the first few minutes, causing Brazil a few issues with flicked first-time balls into the channels. One such move brings them a corner, but Ruben Vargas can’t clear the first man. A waste.

4 mins: Switzerland can’t afford to do this too often. Richarlison is left in too much space inside the penalty to meet Alex Sandro’s whipped freekick from the right, but fails to get enough on his header. Early warning though.

3 mins: Still waiting for this one to settle down with neither side able to establish a pattern of play yet. Switzerland are putting a record on the line here at Stadium 974.

KICKOFF: Switzerland get us started; which of these teams will be making it two wins from two?

3 mins from kickoff: The teams emerge from the tunnel, and here we go with the anthems.

5 mins from kickoff: Final preparations just about complete; kickoff fast approaching.

10 mins from kickoff: A couple of players to watch tonight. Richarlison, the two-goal hero against Serbia, has scored nine goals in his last seven appearances in all competitions for Brazil while Breel Embolo’s winners against Cameroon was his third goal in four matches for Switzerland.

15 mins from kickoff: Brazil are looking to set a piece of World Cup history here. They’re unbeaten in their last 16 group games; no side has ever managed 17 matches without defeat.

Both these sides can join France as the only side so far to make it two wins from two at Qatar 2022. Indeed, Switzerland are looking to win their opening two games at a World Cup for the first time.

20 mins from kickoff: This is the sides’ third World Cup meeting, and a second in as many tournaments. They drew 1-1 in their opening round of fixtures at Russia 2018, Philippe Coutinho’s first-half opener for Brazil cancelled out by Steven Zuber soon after the restart.

Brazil went on to finish first in Group E on seven points, Switzerland joining them in the round of 16 having claimed the runners-up spot with five.

30 mins from kickoff: Neymar will be a big miss for Brazil today, but how have they fared in his absence recently? Opta have crunched the numbers and it doesn’t make for good reading!

40 mins from kickoff: Things a bit more orderly in the Switzerland dressing room…

45 mins from kickoff: The traditional party atmosphere on the Brazil bus!

55 mins from kickoff: The answer as to who will replace Neymar in the Brazil lineup is Fred, who joins his Manchester United teammate Casemiro in midfield with Lucas Paqueta expected to push forward in support of Richarlison.

For Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri makes was for Fabian Rieder on the right of midfield.

1 hr 5 mins from kickoff: And hot on the heels of the arrival of the teams, the starting lineups are IN!

1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: You might be wondering who was on hand to greet the Brazil players when they arrived at the stadium…

1 hr 30 mins from kickoff: Both previous meetings between Brazil and Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup finals have ended in a draw (2-2 in 1950, 1-1 in 2018).

Portugal and Hungary are the only nations who can match that unbeaten record against the five-time champions.

2 hrs from kickoff: Inside Brazil’s dressing room. Who would you put your shirt on to shine as they seek to secure a second successive success at this showpiece?

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Those goals against Serbia made in nine goals for Richarlison in his last seven appearances in all competitions for Brazil.

Since his debut for the national side in September 2018, the Tottenham forward has scored more for Brazil than any other player (19).

3 hrs from kickoff: Switzerland have produced this video message to remind their opponents that they are unlikely to be pushovers.

The 1-1 draw these sides shared at the 2018 edition was the first time since 1978 that Brazil had failed to win their opening match.

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Want a potential matchwinner? Breel Embolo has scored in three of his last four matches for Switzerland, netting the decisive goal in each game – including against Cameroon.

4 hrs from kickoff: Since his first World Cup in 2014, Neymar has been fouled 53 times in the competition – at least 11 more than any other player. Little wonder he picks up injuries.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: We’ll see how Brazil play against Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri, and whether the danger he presents will force left-back Alex Sandro to do more defending and less attacking down Brazil’s left side. Their attacks down the right with Eder Militao playing at right-back should also be down given his defense-first tendencies.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Swiss manager Murat Yakin was asked about Brazil’s two absences and he reminded everyone that Brazil have so many world-class players they could field three teams. (You’d need 33 players on the roster instead of 26 to have three teams, but you get his point.)

5 hrs from kickoff: Another reason that regular center-back Eder Militao is the favorite over Dani Alves to take over at right-back from the injured Danilo? The far post ball into the box that Switzerland love to deliver through Xherdan Shaqiri’s magical left foot.

Former Brazil international Filipe Luis explains how many of Switzerland’s goals in recent years come on headers at that far post on balls delivered by Shaqiri. Dani Alves would be at a definite disadvantage for aerial defending. Watch Filipe Luis explain it here (in Portuguese but visuals are clear):

Brazil vs. Switzerland lineups, team news

Brazil manager Tite will have to do without Neymar (right ankle ligaments) and right-back Danilo (ankle sprain), though he’s adamant both will play again during this World Cup.

Lucas Paqueta moved into Neymar’s attacking mid role with Fred entering the picture alongside Man United teammate Casemiro in central midfield. Center-back Eder Militao took over at right-back instead of Dani Alves.

Brazil (4-3-3, right to left): 1-Alisson (GK) — 14-Eder Militao, 4-Marquinhos, 3-Thiago Silva, 6-Alex Sandro — 8-Fred, 5-Casemiro, 7-Lucas Paqueta — 11-Raphinha, 9-Richarlison, 20-Vinicius Jr.

RB Salzburg forward Noah Okafor, who would have been an attacking option off the bench for Switzerland, is not available for the match due to a quad injury. Otherwise, the same lineup that played Cameroon took the field against Brazil with the exception of Fabian Rieder replacing Xherdan Shaqiri on the right.

Switzerland (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1-Sommer (GK) — 3-Widmer, 5-Akanji, 4-Elvedi, 13-Ricardo Rodriguez — 8-Freuler, 10-Xhaka — 25-Rieder, 15-Sow, 17-Vargas — 7-Embolo
