A woman who has always preferred to have her hair short was recently told she needed to wear hair extensions to her sister’s wedding or face being uninvited altogether. The woman, who was chosen to be one of her sister’s bridesmaids, usually keeps her hair chin length but was told during a recent wedding planning discussion that this wouldn’t be acceptable.

During this discussion, her sister stated that her chin-length bob was “way too short” and would appear “odd and attention-grabbing” given that the rest of the bridesmaids had longer hair. Therefore she was instructed to get herself some hair extensions. Not wanting to pay for extensions she’d only wear for one day, especially as she dislikes the way she looks with long hair, she told her sister this wouldn’t be happening, and assumed this would be the end of the conversation.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/taaaawh, the exasperated bridesmaid wrote: “Last week she texted me asking if I had picked the hairstylist for my hair extensions and that she wanted to see her previous work before I got them done.

“I once again, said I wasn’t getting hair extensions she then replied saying that it ‘wasn’t up for discussion’ and that I should pick or she’ll pick someone for me. So I went and found a hairstylist near my house and I sent her the Instagram page, she liked her work and texted back saying that it looks great and I should go for it so I went for it, except I cut my hair even shorter and got a pixie cut.”

After sending her sister a picture of her new hair, she received a panicked phone call asking whether or not it was photoshopped. When it dawned on her that the haircut was in fact completely real, her sister hung up.

The bridesmaid then received a second call from their mother, who accused her of being “cruel and difficult” and “trying to ruin my sister’s wedding.” They’re both still adamant about her getting hair extensions, and her sister has even threatened to uninvite her from the wedding altogether if she doesn’t comply.

She went on to clarify that she’d been planning on getting a pixie cut after the wedding, but decided to bring her appointment forward after being told the hair extensions issue “wasn’t up for discussion”. Now she’s wondering whether she should have just complied, and has turned to fellow Reddit users for advice.

One person commented: “If she’s willing to uninvite you altogether over this, why did she even ask you to be a bridesmaid? And if your hair can ruin her entire wedding, that’s some mighty powerful hair. Congrats on your super hair!”

Another said: “If you having a short haircut is going to ruin the wedding it is a terrible wedding in the first place. You and the other bridesmaid are human beings, not set dressing and she doesn’t get to demand you alter your physical appearance in any way.

“Your mum should also be ashamed of allowing your grown-ass sister to behave like a toddler and have a temper tantrum like this.”
