LAS VEGAS — There would be no controversy on this night. Canelo Alvarez was faster and stronger and simply outworked his rival. He upended Gennadiy Golovkin in a definitive unanimous decision victory to retain his undisputed super middleweight crown Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.
Unlike their previous two outings, which were marred by controversy, Canelo (58-2-2) made a statement from the outset of the third fight. He took the center of the ring and routinely beat Golovkin (42-2-1) to the punch.
Maybe it was the added weight or the age, but the 40-year-old Golovkin just couldn’t get going after campaigning his entire career at 160 pounds.
Golovkin outworked Canelo in each of their first two meetings, and plenty of observers believed that GGG deserved at least one win. That wasn’t the case Saturday.
GGG did find success in the middle rounds and briefly stunned Canelo in the ninth with a right hand. But it was too little, too late. Canelo had banked enough rounds to ensure victory.
“It didn’t surprise me,” Canelo said of GGG’s late rally. “I know him. He’s a strong fighter. For me, I’m just glad to share the ring with him. He’s a really good fighter. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fight.”
It wasn’t quite the barnburner the first two fights were, but it was still a great fight that saw one of the best boxers of this generation end a heated rivalry with respect. Canelo and GGG embraced afterward and stated that the bad blood was over.
“Thank you so much my friend, thank you Golovkin, thank you for everything,” said Canelo. “We gave the fans three good fights. Thank you for everything.”
Golovkin’s future is in question. He could retire, but he wouldn’t confirm that following the second loss of his career. Instead, he suggested a move back to 160 pounds to defend his titles.
“Remember, I’m still champion at 160,” Golovkin said. “I come back guys, I’m still champion.”
Canelo injured his left hand in the fight and said he needs some rest. When he returns, he could go after a rematch with Dimitry Bivol or stay at 168 pounds and defend his titles.
But for now, one of the best boxing feuds in recent memory is over, without any controversy or confusion.
Here’s how it all went down.

11:30 p.m.: The national anthems have been sung. It’s time for Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin to complete their trilogy!
Jesse Rodriguez retains title with a dominant outing against Israel Gonzalez
Scores: 118-109, 117-110, 114-113
11:04 p.m.: Well, he didn’t get the knockout but Bam was absolutely dominant. Rodriguez was docked a point in the ninth round for a low blow. But he still was committed to the body attack and seemingly scored a knockdown with a body shot. However, Gonzalez said the punch strayed low and it wasn’t ruled. He tried to finish the job in the 12th round but Gonzalez was a tough nut to crack. Somehow, one judge only had it 114-113. We’ll act like that never happened.
10:54 p.m.: Surprisingly, Gonzalez is still here and fighting back as we head into the championship rounds. Rodriguez is comfortably ahead but he didn’t come here to win a decision. Gonzalez refuses to back down but will need a miracle to pull off the comeback.
10:39 p.m.: This is about to get ugly. Rodriguez is landing with alarming frequency and the punches are rolling downhill. Gonzalez is a game fighter but the talent gap is just too wide for him to overcome. Bam has started to add more power punches between the jabs and Gonzalez isn’t taking the punches as well as he was earlier in the fight. We’re heading into Round 8.
10:25 p.m.: Rodriguez is starting to crank up the pressure and landing with his jab and lead right in the fourth round. It certainly feels like he has things figured out in the fourth round. Bam also promised that this wouldn’t go the distance.
10:12 p.m.: The co-main event is up now with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez defending his WBC super flyweight title against Israel Gonzalez. Bam is expected to dominate. Let’s see if he does.
Ali Ahkmedov pitches shutout against Gabriel Rosado
10:04 p.m.: Rosado has been known to give even the best fighters a rough go, but he just couldn’t outbox Ali Akhmedov and was shut out over the course of 10 rounds. All three judges saw it in favor of Akhmedov with 100-90 scores, and the action in the ring reflected the dominant scorecards. Rosado simply didn’t have anything for Akhmedov on this night and at 36, Father Time isn’t on his side.
9:14 p.m.: Up next is Gabriel Rosado against Ali Akhmedov in super middleweight action. Rosado gave Jamie Munguia all he could handle and should have earned decisions over Daniel Jacobs and Shane Mosley Jr. Akhmedov is looking to get back on track after being upset by Carlos Gongora back in 2020.
Austin Williams picks up decision victory over Keiron Conway
9:01 p.m.: It wasn’t the greatest performance but a ninth-round knockdown helped a relatively out-of-sync Williams earn a unanimous decision over Conway with scores of 96-93, 97-92 and 97-92. He’s still undefeated and will aim to have a better performance his next time out. The talent is certainly there. We have to wonder where his head is at these days.
8:35 p.m.: Austin “Ammo” Williams is one of the young fighters to watch but he hasn’t looked all that great through five rounds against Keiron Conway in middleweight action. Williams hasn’t quite looked like himself all week and has had some mental health issues to overcome. Could they be plaguing him here?
What have you missed?
Well, Marc Castro demolished Kevin Mendoza.
MARC CASTRO DOES IT AGAIN 😮
