In a surprising turn of events, Cher has once again ignited the flames of her long-standing feud with Madonna, responding to the Material Girl’s use of an old interview clip in a recent tour. The 77-year-old icon didn’t mince her words when addressing the inclusion of a 1991 interview where she famously labeled Madonna as “mean” and even used an explicit term to describe her.
During a candid interview with The Los Angeles Times, published last Friday, Cher didn’t shy away from expressing her candid thoughts on Madonna’s recent move. When questioned about her reaction to the clip being used, Cher laughed it off and retorted, “I said a lot worse than that,” referencing the strong language she used back in 1991.
Insisting that her feelings were not indicative of an ongoing feud, Cher clarified, “It’s not a beef. I actually like her. But come on.” Pressed further to elaborate, Cher simply responded with a cryptic, “Come on.”
Cher took the opportunity to reiterate her sentiments from the 1991 interview, where she openly criticized Madonna’s behavior. “There’s something about her that I don’t like. She’s mean. I don’t like that,” Cher asserted. Recalling past interactions, she shared, “I remember having her over to my house a couple of times, because [Sean Penn] and I were friends, and she just was so rude to everybody. It seems to me that she’s got so much that she doesn’t have to act that way.”

But Cher didn’t stop at just one critique. She continued, highlighting Madonna’s attitude: “She acts like a spoiled brat all the time. And it seems to me when you reach the kind of acclaim that she’s reached — and you can do whatever you want to do — you should be a little bit more magnanimous, and a little bit less of a controversial figure,” Cher stated.
While Cher acknowledged that her perspective on Madonna had evolved over the years, she didn’t hesitate to express her belief that Madonna isn’t the friendliest face in Hollywood. “You’re saying she’s mean?” the interviewer inquired, to which Cher replied, “She can be.”
However, Cher did acknowledge Madonna’s unique talents and foresight. “We buried that hatchet a long time ago because I called her something so much worse, and she forgave me. But I give her this: There’s no one like her that had their ear to the ground and knew everything before anybody else. I mean, she knew what was coming, and she was right on it. I always felt that was her greatest gift — that she could sense the trends before any of us,” Cher confessed.
As the interview concluded, the seasoned superstar teased about the past, challenging anyone curious about her exact words to “look it up.” The saga between Cher and Madonna continues, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this iconic rivalry.
