Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes explains what he saw on game-sealing interception in loss to Bills

The Chiefs had a chance to mount a game-winning drive in the final minute of their Week 6 contest Sunday against the Bills. They weren’t able to accomplish the feat.

On the second play, Patrick Mahomes tried to fit a pass into a tight window to rookie Skyy Moore. Bills cornerback Taron Johnson jumped the route and intercepted the pass.

Johnson’s pick allowed the Bills to run out the final 52 seconds of a 24-20 victory.

The interception was the second of the day by Mahomes, who had just two interceptions in his first five games.

Mahomes’ first interception Sunday was the result of a great play by Kaiir Elam. What went wrong on the second one? Mahomes explained in his postgame news conference what he saw.

“We had a corner route and he had dropped back, and I kind of wanted to reset and throw it to him fast,” Mahomes said. “[Matt] Milano was in the way and then by the time I reset and threw to [Moore], [Johnson] made a great play and got back in there.”

Johnson may have picked off the pass, but his teammate Von Miller also had a big role in the play.

The veteran edge rusher got pressure on Mahomes after beating a double team. That forced Mahomes into making the quick decision.

“Great team play,” Miller said of Buffalo’s final defensive snap. “It just feels good to go out there and do your job.”

Mahomes didn’t seem too down on himself afterward. He thought that the interception was more due to Johnson’s quick reaction than his decision to throw the ball.

I mean, that’s a good defense. That’s a good player. You’re at the end of the game and trying to press the issue and trying to get some completions. So you got to score a touchdown, but he made a good play when it counted.

Coach Andy Reid agreed with Mahomes’ take.

“He was trying to make something happen,” Reid said. “Normally, it does. That one, the guy made a nice play on it.”

Still, Mahomes said the loss “definitely hurt.”

“Every time I get the ball, no matter what the situation is, I expect to find a way to win,” he said. “That’s what this whole offensive team expects.”
