When it comes to planning a trip to the cinema, most people start thinking about the sweets they can devour when watching the latest blockbuster. But to avoid paying out for the costly confectionary, many of us stash a fizzy drink and a bag of Haribo in our bags to sneak into the cinema with.

One cinema worker has revealed how we have all been unnecessarily sneaking sweets in when we could have walked through with them proudly on show, as bringing “outside sweets” into the cinema is perfectly acceptable. Taking to Reddit, the worker joked: “What do they think I’m going to do? Send them to cinema jail for bringing in some Haribo?”.

He explained how watching people try to sneak past him with their sweets is one of his favourite things about the job – as it makes him chuckle every single time.

He said: “I work at an independent cinema and I’m always being asked if you’re allowed to bring in your own sweets to eat and what happens if we catch people bringing in ‘outside sweets’.

“I find it hilarious watching people try to sneak sweets into the cinema like they’re on some sort of Breaking Bad drug smuggling scheme.

“I sit from the ticket booth watching them speak to their friends about the fact they already have sweets in their bag and flashing them the sweets. They look around to make sure nobody is watching and it’s hilarious to me.”

Explaining the lengths people will go to bring in their own sweets, he claims to have spotted one teenager hiding a bag of chocolates under his cap before showing an attendant his ticket.

He added: “Rest assure everyone, there is no rule against bringing in your own sweets but please carry on bringing them in in the most secret ways possible.”

Although he works at an independent cinema, his words have been backed by Cineworld, Vue and Odeon.

The revelation came after a cinema-goer asked on Twitter : “Am I allowed to bring my own food and drinks into the screen?”

Cineworld replied: “Hey, as long as it’s not hot or strong smelling food, you’re perfectly fine to bring it with you.”

Vue gave a similar response, writing: “You sure are! You’re welcome to bring your own cold food and non-alcoholic drinks into any of our venues. I hope this helps.”

Odeon added: “Hi! No problem at all, we just ask that they aren’t hot, too smelly or alcoholic.”
