Philadelphia’s dreams of a perfect season have been shattered.
The Eagles’ first loss of the campaign came in stunning fashion on Monday night as they fell, 32-21, to the Commanders. It was a wild, back-and-forth game full of refereeing controversy, but ultimately Philly couldn’t overcome a number of self-inflicted wounds.
Two fumbles by Dallas Goedert and Quez Watkins in the 4th quarter proved to be the pivotal plays of the game. However, Goedert was the victim of a blatant face mask just before he coughed up the football, leaving the fans at Lincoln Financial Field furious.
MORE: Officials’ “blatant” missed face mask penalty leaves social media livid
But the Eagles had only themselves to blame after an unnecessary roughness penalty on Brandon Graham in the final minutes took away their last chance to pull off a comeback.
Despite all the chaos, Taylor Heinicke and the Commanders deserve plenty of credit for an excellent performance on the road. The journeyman quarterback helped lead his offense on a number of marathon touchdown drives that burned clock and put them in the driver’s seat. Washington finished with more than twice as much time of possession as Philly (40:24 to 19:36).

The loss dropped the Eagles to 8-1, just a game ahead of the Giants in the NFC East. For the Commanders, it was by far the biggest win of their season, and they’re now back to .500 with a 5-5 record.

11:15 p.m. — What a game, and what a night for the Commanders. No one gave them a chance, but they came out and played a great game (and were helped by some self-inflicted wounds by the Eagles along the way). Philadelphia’s dreams of a perfect season have been crushed.
Final: Commanders 32, Eagles 21
11:09 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — A bizarre game ends in fittingly bizarre fashion! Philly tries to run a lateral play, but DeVonta Smith threw it straight backwards onto the turf. It goes straight to Washington’s Casey Toohill, who picks it up for the easiest touchdown anyone will score this season. It’s basically meaningless for this game, but someone, somewhere may have just suffered an absolutely brutal loss in fantasy.

11:07 p.m. — The Commanders opt to kneel it rather than running the ball, and they punt it away with a few ticks remaining. The Eagles have the ball back on their own 10-yard line with 5 seconds on the clock.
11:04 p.m. — WOW. This game has been simply crazy. Heinicke dropped back to throw, but he was swarmed by Eagles pass-rushers. He dropped to the ground and simply took a knee to waste another timeout, but Brandon Graham came in with a late hit and the officials throw the flag! That is an enormous mistake, and it will likely cost the Eagles their final chance to win this game.

11:02 p.m. — Robinson runs for a pair of short gains to set up 3rd and 7. A first down for Washington likely ends the game here.
10:59 p.m. — Another strange turn of events just took place on the punt attempt. Arryn Siposs ran to his right before kicking it away to avoid a block, resulting in an ineligible downfield kick penalty. They had to attempt the punt again, which caused the clock to run down to the two-minute warning. That’s bad news for Philly, they needed that extra clock stoppage in these final minutes.
10:57 p.m. — The Commanders’ defense comes up with a huge stop! Montez Sweat sacks Hurts on 3rd and 8 to force a punt with just over two minutes left!

10:53 p.m. — A big 3rd down play for Washington gets erased by an offensive pass interference penalty on Jahan Dotson. It was a tight call, but there was definitely contact. Gibson can’t quite reach the line to gain on the following play, and the Eagles will get the ball right back! This has been a wild game.

10:51 p.m. FUMBLE — ANOTHER HUGE TURNOVER. Hurts goes deep for Watkins, who hauls it in for what looks like a massive gain. But St-Juste knocks the ball loose, and Forrest picks it up to give the Commanders the ball back again! Incredible!

10:50 p.m. — Philly’s drive gets off to a rough start. A holding penalty on Landon Dickerson moves them back 10 yards right off the bat and sets up 1st and 20.

10:46 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The kick is GOOD. Slye has been outstanding tonight. The Commanders’ lead is now 5.

10:44 p.m. — The Eagles’ defense responds with a massive stop. Heinicke is swarmed on 3rd and 13, and he has to just throw the ball away. The Commanders were called for an ineligible man downfield penalty, but Nick Sirianni chose to decline it. Interesting choice there… Declining that penalty sets up a 55-yard field goal attempt, whereas accepting it would have pushed them even further back.
10:37 p.m. FUMBLE — WOW. A lot to unpack here. Hurts tosses to Goedert, who coughs up the ball and the Commanders recover! Originally it was ruled a scoop-and-score touchdown, but the defender was clearly touched down before the return. The officials missed an egregious face mask call on Goedert, and the fans in Philly are already letting them hear it. Unfortunately for them, there’s no way that missed call can be reversed. It will be Washington’s football at the Eagles’ 34-yard line with 9 minutes left in the game. Wild sequence there.
Not sure how the refs missed the facemask. Washington got away with one here pic.twitter.com/2QR52pBT4B

10:35 p.m. — On 2nd and 7, Hurts scrambles up the middle for a gain of 10 to get the ensuing drive off to a good start.
10:31 p.m. INTERCEPTION — On 3rd and 3, Heinicke drops back and heaves one deep left for McLaurin, but it’s picked off by Gardner-Johnson! He redeems himself for that penalty, making what could be a pivotal play in this game!

10:29 p.m. — Washington has it back, and on the second play of the drive the Eagles commit a costly unnecessary roughness penalty. The officials thought C.J. Gardner-Johnson hit Curtis Samuel late on his way out of bounds, but after looking at the replay I’m not so sure. It’s a big call, as it moves the Commanders up to midfield.

10:23 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — On his 24th birthday, DeVonta Smith makes the catch, breaks a tackle and waltzes in for a touchdown! After an important extra point attempt by Jake Elliott is good, the Eagles now trail by just 2.

End of third quarter: Commanders 23, Eagles 14
10:20 p.m. — Sanders rips off another nice run to move the ball down to the Commanders’ 10-yard line, and that’ll take us to the end of the third quarter. This is setting up to be an exciting finish.
10:18 p.m. — A 15 yard completion to Goedert keeps the Eagles moving, and a few plays later Sanders converts on 3rd and short to move them close to the red zone.
10:16 p.m. — Miles Sanders powers ahead on 2nd and 4 for a desperately-needed Eagles first down. A few plays later, Hurts connects with Quex Watkins on 3rd and 7 to move the chains again.
Commanders 23, Eagles 14
10:11 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Slye drills it, and Washington now holds a two-possession lead. Each of the team’s drives has taken a ton of time off the clock, and just over 5 minutes now remain in the third quarter.
10:10 p.m. — The Eagles’ defense FINALLY gets a stop. Heinicke gets sacked for a big loss on 3rd and goal, and the Commanders will have to settle for a field goal try.

10:07 p.m. — On 3rd and 1, Gibson pushes the pile forward to make it 1st and goal. The time of possession stats tonight are pretty mind-blowing: Washington has had the football for over 30 minutes of game time compared to a mere 7 minutes and 35 seconds for Philadelphia.
10:05 p.m. — Heinicke goes deep to McLaurin (who else?) and the receiver makes a great catch to set the Commanders up in the red zone!

10:04 p.m. — The 3rd down conversions continue. This time it’s Heinicke who powers up the middle on another short yardage situation to keep the drive alive.
10:02 p.m. — The Commanders get the ball back, and they convert another 3rd down thanks to a powerful run by Robinson. He’s been really effective so far tonight.
9:58 p.m. — And that’s not a good start. On 3rd and 3, Hurts’ pass intended for Brown is broken up. This will be the second consecutive three-and-out for the Eagles offense.
9:55 p.m. START OF SECOND HALF — Here we go. Philly has 30 minutes left to turn this game around and keep a perfect season intact.
9:44 p.m. — This is the first time the Eagles have trailed at halftime all season. How will they respond?
End of first half: Commanders 20, Eagles 14

9:41 p.m. — A Heinicke pass to Dyami Brown moves the Commanders to the Philadelphia 40-yard line — the very edge of field goal range. After an incompletion, Slye will trot on for an attempt from nearly 60 yards.
9:37 p.m. — But they can’t get anything going, and a Hurts incompletion deep to A.J. Brown brings up 4th and 5. The Commanders are actually going to get the ball back with a chance to stretch their lead.
9:33 p.m. — The Eagles will get the ball back with about a minute and a half left and a chance to tie or take the lead heading into halftime.
Commanders 17, Eagles 14
9:31 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — INCREDIBLE. Robinson refuses to go down, muscling his way into the end zone to give Washington the lead! Another magnificent drive for the Commanders (this one was 16 plays and 86 yards) ends in a touchdown! Who saw this coming?

9:27 p.m. — Robinson powers his way for 12 more yards to set up 1st and goal from the Eagles’ 3.
9:24 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — Finally, the Commanders come up short on a 3rd down play as McLaurin gets dragged down just shy of the marker. But on 4th and 1, Samuel bulldozes ahead for a first down. That’ll take us to the two-minute warning.
9:22 p.m. — Washington has been absolutely amazing on 3rd down so far this game. The team is now 8 of 10 on 3rd down conversions. They just got another one thanks to another completion to McLaurin.
9:19 p.m. — On the next play, a bad snap goes flying over Heinicke’s head, but he manages to scoop the ball off the turf and throw it out of bounds to avoid a massive loss. That was a really nice heads up play.
9:17 p.m. — The Commanders convert ANOTHER 3rd down! Heinicke goes over the middle for Curtis Samuel, who scurries for a big gain of 23 yards to move the chains.
9:11 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Well, make that 8 of 12 now. Hurts launches one deep down the field into double-coverage for A.J. Brown, and it gets picked off by Darrick Forrest! That was a fantastic play to make the interception. The Commanders will take over near their own 20-yard line!

Eagles 14, Commanders 10
9:06 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Slye knocks it through from 44 yards out to cut the Eagles’ lead to 4.
9:05 p.m. — Woof. Heinicke loses track of the clock, and a well-designed direct snap play (that would have easily picked up a first down) goes to waste due to a delay-of-game penalty. Big self-inflicted wound there for the Commanders. Joey Slye is coming on for a field goal attempt now.

9:03 p.m. — On 3rd and short, Robinson gets buried behind the line of scrimmage to set up 4th down. It looks like “Riverboat” Ron Rivera might leave the offense on the field and go for this…
9:02 p.m. — On 3rd and 8, Heinicke finds McLaurin again for another big first down. McLaurin is off to a nice start in this one.
9:00 p.m. — An illegal contact call on Darius Slay moves the Commanders into Eagles territory. On the next play, Robinson runs for a short gain, but more importantly, Josh Sweat is down hurt. He’d be a big loss for this Philly defense.
End of first quarter: Eagles 14, Commanders 7
8:52 p.m. — The quarter ends with Heinicke completing it to McLaurin for another Washington 1st down. That was a wild and entertaining quarter to start this game.

8:46 p.m. — An offensive holding call backs the Eagles up 10 yards, but on the very next play, a deep shot to Smith in the end zone draws a defensive pass interference penalty on Benjamin St-Juste. It’ll be first and goal for Philly.
8:44 p.m. — Facing 3rd and 10, Hurts goes to his other main target, DeVonta Smith, for a pickup of 11 yards to move the chains. It looks like Brown is going to come back in now. A big sigh of relief from everyone in the building tonight.
8:42 p.m. — Even without Brown, Hurts continues to march his offense down the field. Two more completions (to Jack Stoll and Zach Pascal) puts them near midfield.
8:40 p.m. — Uh oh. A.J. Brown made a short catch for a first down, but he pulled up hurt at the end of the play. He’s checking out of the game. Bad news for Eagles fans.
Eagles 7, Commanders 7
8:36 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — What an answer! Antonio Gibson leaps majestically over the pile, crossing the plane for a Commanders touchdown! An impressive 13-play, 75-yard drive by Washington.

8:32 p.m. — On 3rd and 2, Heinicke finds a wide open Terry McLaurin deep down the field for a big gain of 26 yards. The Commanders suddenly find themselves with a red zone opportunity.
8:28 p.m. — Robinson rushes for a Commanders first down, their first of the night. His story really is incredible, and he keeps on getting better on the field each week as he continues to recover from being shot in an attempted carjacking prior to the start of the season.

8:20 p.m. — Oh man. The Commanders’ drive is going to continue, and it’s because of a huge mental error by the Eagles on special teams. Reed Blankenship roughed the punter, giving Washington a free first down.
8:19 p.m. — A pair of short runs by Brian Robinson Jr. sets up 3rd and 5, and Heinicke’s first throw of the night goes off the hands of his receiver to bring up 4th down. The night starts with a three-and-out from the Commanders.
8:18 p.m. — Antonio Gibson has a nice return on the opening kickoff wiped out by a holding penalty. Heinicke and his offense will go to work from inside their own 10-yard line.
8:16 p.m. — The Eagles won the coin flip and elected to defer, so the Commanders will get the ball first on offense. Let’s play some football.
8:09 p.m. — Kickoff is drawing closer from Philadelphia. Who will triumph in this NFC East battle?
