A woman has received an angry backlash after refusing to serve alcohol at her parents 50th wedding anniversary party – because she doesn’t drink. In a Reddit post, she explained how she had taken it upon herself to organise the celebration after her parents had suggested they wanted a party for this anniversary.

“So far, 40 people have RSVPed yes. As I mentioned, I am paying for everything, including the food/drinks. My parents have not been super involved with planning, since I offered to do all the work,” the woman wrote in the post.

A few days before the party, her sister went over to see all the preparations and was less than impressed with the plans for the drinks, specifically the lack of any booze.

Her sister felt guests would be expecting booze and the party could be boring without it.

Despite liking everything else such as the food and the decorations, she was angry at her sister’s insistence that this should be a dry event.

However, the woman feels that as she is the one who has organised all of the party, and has even footed the bill, it is ok for her not to allow alcohol.

“I want this to be a dry event. My husband and I don’t believe in drinking alcohol, and we don’t want to pay for other people to drink. My plan is to just have sodas and water for people,” she wrote in her post.

However, her sister has said that guests will be expecting alcohol to be served and will not enjoy the party if there is no booze there.

“She got really mad when I put my foot down, and said that the party will flop without the social lubricant of alcohol to smooth the way,” she continued.

There was a backlash from her post as many Redditors felt she had no place to force a dry event on people and should have at the least asked people to bring their own booze.

One person replied to the post: “It’s pretty much as if you were vegan and they weren’t and you had a vegan event. It’s fine if you don’t want to spend your money on meat, but you can’t stop other people from bringing it.”

Another suggested: “She should at least let everyone know that they don’t believe in drinking alcohol so there won’t be any provided by the hosts who took over the event so people are welcome to BYOB.”

“However it is their house and if they don’t want alcohol then they don’t need to. If anyone thinks otherwise they should offer to host or pitch in to co-host the party elsewhere,” stated one Redditor in agreement with the sister organising the party.
