Does Deontay Wilder have one more run at the heavyweight title left in the tank?
Back in action, former WBC heavyweight champion is looking to provide fans with some entertainment before he walks away from the sport for good. Robert Helenius is looking to shock the world and become one step closer to finally fighting for gold. The two are set to clash on October 15 inside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Wilder defended the WBC heavyweight title ten times, with a draw against Tyson Fury in the middle of those defenses. “The Bronze Bomber” lost to Fury in a rematch in February 2020 via TKO, losing the title in the process. In the trilogy fight in October 2021, Fury knocked Wilder out in the eleventh round to retain the WBC title.
Wilder, 37, is ready to hang up the gloves when he is 40. If he can get past former sparring partner Helenius, Wilder wants to face the very best boxing has to offer.
“With these last three years that I have, I want to be able to say I went against all of them before it’s over with, to add on to my legacy,” Wilder told ESPN. “And once that’s complete, then we will say this era of boxing was an amazing era because we had so many great fighters and so many great champions that fought each other.”

A European heavyweight champion, Helenius is 7-2 in his last nine fights. “The Nordic Nightmare” beat Adam Kownacki via TKO in March 2020 in a major upset. He beat Kownacki in a rematch on October 2021, also via TKO. Already a contender for the WBA heavyweight title, he has an opportunity to also become a contender for the WBC title.

Emmanuel Rodriguez drops, earns decision over Gary Antonio Russell in bizarre fight
Result: We go to the scorecards and Rodriguez earns a unanimous decision with scores of 100-90, 99-91 & 99-93. Russell has his first blemish and Rodriguez still has something left in the tank.
10:09 p.m.: Well, that was something. Emmanuel Rodriguez clobbered Russell with a straight right hand that sent him to the canvas with a second left in the eighth round. Russell was in terrible shape but made it to his feet. Referee Benji Esteves didn’t signal for an end to the round and allowed Russell to get to the stool without the bell sounding. But without the referee signaling for the end of the round, the clock was never reset and we went into the 9th round with no active clock. And then a clash of heads in the 9th round sent Rodriguez down. But he made it to his feet and finished the round. However, between rounds, the doctors took a look at Rodriguez and decided the fight could no longer continue. This fight will go to the scorecards. This is absolutely bizarre.
9:43 p.m.: Rodriguez is giving Russell a lot of trouble and buzzed him in both the first and twice in the fourth round. He’s going to have to get himself together sooner than later as Rodriguez is building momentum.
9:21 p.m.: We’re off to a late start for the PPV portion of the card as the undercards ran slightly over. Gary Antonio Russell and Emmanuel Rodriguez will clash in bantamweight action to get things started. It’s a rematch after a clash of heads seconds into their 2021 bout ended up as a No Contest.
