Diner left puzzled after being confronted at all you can eat buffet for ‘eating too much’

A foodie had been very excited to dine out at an all-you-can-eat restaurant and made sure to pile their plate high with all the treats they fancied. They didn’t however bank on being confronted for eating ‘too much’

When dining out at an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, you would naturally assume this would be the one place where you can eat as much as you want without fear of judgement. Alas, one foodie recently found themselves in a bit of a confrontation after taking ‘too much’ from the buffet.

They’d been ‘excited’ for a breakfast-time visit to the buffet, and so piled their plate with ‘a tower of scrambled eggs’ before getting back up for two rounds of pancakes. After munching their way through these, they went back up for round four, only to be met with a ‘dirty look’ from a fellow diner.

Taking to Reddit, the unnamed diner wrote: “I recently went to an all-you-can-eat buffet. I really love food and I was so excited. I went around breakfast so as soon as I got there, I got a big plate that had on it a piece of bread layered with bacon and a tower of scrambled eggs on top.

“I sat down and ate it all in about five minutes as I’m a pretty fast eater. I went back and got three pancakes absolutely smothered with maple syrup, butter, and whipped cream. I ate it all and went back to get yet another place of pancakes.”

They continued: “This time, I saw a woman giving me a dirty look. I got my pancakes and went and ate them all. I went to get the bread, eggs, and bacon again but a woman approached me. She told me I shouldn’t be eating this much as there are other people here and it’s a lot for the chefs to cook only for me to eat it all. I brushed it off and got what I went back up there for, and ate that. She was looking at me from another table still. “

The baffled diner, who left shortly afterwards, went on to clarify that the woman didn’t appear to be an employee at the restaurant, and had been ‘sitting at a table eating as well’. Despite initially assuming they’d done nothing wrong, they’ve since come to doubt themselves.

One fellow Reddit user commented: “It’s a buffet, it’s all you can eat, not all she wants you to eat. The restaurant has figured out how much it charges in order to make a profit based on how much people are eating.

“It will profit on some and lose on others, the staff will get paid and it is their job to cook. Unless you were taking entire tray pans of food, you weren’t going to make a dent in their workload. The woman, whether she worked there or not, and I;m thinking she didn’t, had no reason to insert herself into your life.”

Another advised: “A buffet is set up so you can take as much of what you want as you want. You would be the a****** if you took the entire tray of eggs or bacon, but taking even large portions isn’t wrong. The staff should be monitoring the buffet line and prepping the next trays once it starts to get low.

“Once the new tray is ready they’ll bring it out. Minimal wait times. While I’m impressed at the amount you managed to put away, they are all very easy-to-replenish items. The lady was just being nosy and bossy.”
