Display on LG OLED TV Can Morph From Flat to Curved With a Button Press

The latest TV from LG Electronics can switch from a flat to a curved screen and back again, all with the press of a button.

LG introduced the 42-inch OLED TV and its innovative bending concept today ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin. By tapping a button on a remote control, a user can morph the LG OLED Flex (model LX3) from a flat panel to a screen with an up to 900R(Opens in a new window) curvature. The screen’s curvature can also be altered in 5% increments over 20 different levels.

LG is marketing the OLED Flex as its most customizable TV yet. The bending ability makes it perfect for “immersive console, PC and cloud gaming” along with typical TV viewing, LG says.

The bendable screen likely comes from LG Electronics’ sister company LG Display. At CES 2020, LG Display showed off a similar concept, but with a 65-inch 4K OLED TV that could bend at the edges and morph between the two modes in about 5 seconds. It could also bend back and forth about 35,000 times. But at the time, it was unclear if the concept TV would ever become a real product.

The LG OLED Flex signals that LG Electronics might be ready to finally bring a bendable TV to market. But there’s no word on price or launch date. For now, LG plans on showing off the TV in Berlin; IFA runs from Sept. 2-6.

Along with the high-quality OLED screen, the bendable TV also boasts a 0.1-millisecond response time. LG adds: “The screen of LG OLED Flex can be tilted toward up to 10 degrees or away up to 5 degrees from the user and has a height-adjustable stand—up or down by 140 millimeters—guaranteeing ergonomic comfort for those who like to sit up, and those who like to lean back.”

The company also built several gaming-focused features into the TV. “For example, they can adjust the size of the onscreen image according to their individual preferences or the genre of game they’re playing,” LG says. This means you can play a game that takes up the entire 42-inch space, or downsize the screen to a 32-inch or 27-inch image, making it easier to view an entire game environment in a single glance.

Gamers can also view content from two different sources, enabling them to watch YouTube and play a game at the same time. In addition, the TV comes with built-in microphones, two front-firing 40W speakers, and can connect to a headset, keyboard, or mouse through its USB ports.
