The Bengals’ 27-15 victory over the Dolphins on “Thursday Night Football” was overshadowed by a scary injury to Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Tagovailoa left the game in the second quarter after being sacked by Bengals defensive lineman Josh Tupou. His head and back appeared to hit the ground hard, and he immediately showed signs of a fencing response after the play.
He was stretchered off the field and transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center by ambulance. After the game, the Dolphins announced that he is expected to be discharged from the facility Thursday night — in time to fly home with the team.
MORE: Latest news on Tua Tagovailoa after QB suffers head, neck injuries
Tagovailoa suffered a back injury in Sunday’s game against the Bills (the team initially called it a head injury), but he returned to the field after leaving for an exam and then finished the contest. The return prompted an investigation by the NFL Players Association into how he was allowed back onto the field so quickly.
Teddy Bridgewater entered the game at quarterback in Tagovailoa’s place. The Dolphins’ offense struggled in the second half. It failed to convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns, leaving the door open for Burrow and the Bengals.
Burrow found Tee Higgins for a long touchdown in the second quarter to give Cincinnati the lead. A Burrow touchdown pass to Hayden Hurst in the final minutes of the fourth quarter put the game to bed.

11:22 p.m. FINAL — Cincinnati moves to 2-2 on the season, handing Miami its first loss in the process. Burrow and the Bengals’ offense secured the win with an offensive surge in the 4th quarter.
11:21 p.m. — The Bengals get a stop on 4th and 4 and that’ll do it.
11:18 p.m. — Prime Video sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung just shared that Tua Tagovailoa is expected to be discharged from the hospital in time to travel back to Miami tonight. Good news for all those still concerned following his scary injury tonight.

Bengals 27, Dolphins 15
11:12 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Finally, the Bengals pass it in a goal-to-go situation — and it pays off. Burrow fakes the handoff and tosses it to Hayden Hurst, who jogs in for an easy score. That should lock up the win.

11:07 p.m. — Burrow finds Chase again for a big 36-yard pickup to move down to the Dolphins’ 6-yard line. With just over 2 minutes left on the clock, a touchdown would likely seal the win for Cincy.

11:02 p.m. — Facing a 3rd and 10, Bridgewater takes off and gets just enough to move the chains. Huge play there, and an illegal contact call on the Bengals will gift the Dolphins 5 more yards on top of that.
10:59 p.m. — The Dolphins start their drive by handing it off to Mostert, who rips off a 25-yard gain. With about 5 minutes left on the clock, this feels like a very important drive for Miami.

10:56 p.m. FIELD GOAL — THE KICK IS GOOD. McPherson drills it from 57 yards out to extend the Bengals’ lead to 5 points!

10:53 p.m. — Burrow finds Higgins for a gain of 22, then two plays later hits Ja’Marr Chase for another nice chunk. Chase has been pretty quiet tonight, with just 3 catches for 45 yards so far.
10:49 p.m. — On the ensuing drive, the Dolphins face 3rd and 1 from their own 33-yard line. They hand it off to Edmonds, but he’s bottled up for a loss of a yard. They’ll have to punt it away.

10:28 p.m. — HUGE PLAY FOR MIAMI. After a nice 16-yard pickup on the previous play, Bridgewater airs it out for Hill, who manages to reel it in despite a deflection. That’ll set the Dolphins up inside the 5-yard line with a great chance to take the lead.

10:23 p.m. — Tee Higgins picks up 16 yards on the Bengals first play of the drive, but it stalls out when Burrow throws back-to-back incompletions on 2nd and 3rd down. Cincy will punt it back to Miami. Both offenses have come out pretty flat in this second half.
10:19 p.m. — Another punt coming up. Miami goes three-and-out again after Gesicki got stopped short on 3rd and 4.
10:15 p.m. — Cincinnati moves the ball to midfield after a Tee Higgins catch and a pair of Mixon runs, but a sack on 3rd and 6 stops the drive. The Bengals will now punt it away.
10:09 p.m. — The Dolphins open the half with a quick three-and-out. A false start on 2nd down backs them up, and Bridgewater throws two straight incompletions to bring the punter on.
10:05 p.m. — The second half is underway, with Miami receiving the ball first.
9:53 p.m. — A terrible injury to Tua Tagovailoa has overshadowed all the other events from the first half. We can only hope he’s ok. Here’s the latest update from the Dolphins.
Tua Tagovailoa has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He is conscious and has movement in all his extremities.

9:50 p.m. — Doink alert. Sanders clangs the extra point attempt off of the right upright and it’s no good.
Bengals 14, Dolphins 12
9:48 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — After a Dolphins conversion on 3rd and 5, Chase Edmonds gets a shovel pass and powers ahead for a touchdown. The Dolphins will kick the extra point rather than going for two.

9:44 p.m. — Bridgewater finds Jaylen Waddle for a nice gain to move into Bengals territory. Two plays later, Hill scurries for another first down.
9:40 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — The Dolphins get the ball back and hand it off to Raheem Mostert on two straight plays for short gains. However, an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Bengals will move them up 15 yards. That’ll take us to the two-minute warning.
Bengals 14, Dolphins 6
9:36 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — What a huge turn of events. Just two plays after the blocked kick, Burrow finds Tee Higgins who breaks a tackle and struts into the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown.

9:34 p.m. — The kick is NO GOOD. It looks like a Bengals player may have gotten a hand on that to deny Sanders, with the kick coming up well short.
9:33 p.m. — It’s hard to focus on a football game after what just unfolded, but Bridgewater has entered facing a 3rd and 17 situation. He completes a pass to get close to a first down but comes up just short. The field goal team will come on as the Dolphins try and take their first lead of the night.
9:31 p.m. — Tagovailoa has been wheeled off the field. That was a truly scary moment.
9:27 p.m. — Very scary scene. Tua remains down while the medical team has prepared a stretcher to take him off the field. Questions will no doubt be asked after he suffered what appeared to be a similar injury last week against the Bills. He returned to play in that game.
9:25 p.m. — Oh no. Terrible news for Dolphins fans as Tua is down hurt once again. He got spun down onto the turf and landed directly on his back. That did not look good. The trainers will come on to tend to him while Teddy Bridgewater warms up on the sideline.
9:18 p.m. — The Bengals go three-and-out on the ensuing possession. Burrow’s pass on 3rd and 5 was intended for Tee Higgins but came up short. Miami will get it right back with just under 7 minutes to play in the first half.
Bengals 7, Dolphins 6
9:14 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Sanders sneaks it inside the right upright from 48 yards to make it a one point game.
9:13 p.m. — Two straight incompletions bring up 3rd and 10, and the Cincinnati pass rush forces Tua to throw it away. Another field goal attempt upcoming.
9:10 p.m. — On 3rd and 4, Tua goes deep for Hill again down the left sideline. It falls incomplete, but Chidobe Ewuzie gets whistled for a costly defensive pass interference penalty. That’ll move the Dolphins into Bengals territory and give them a fresh set of downs.
9:08 p.m. — An ineligible receiver downfield penalty backs up Miami five yards, but Tua finds Hill across the middle of the field for a 17-yard gain.
9:03 p.m. TURNOVER ON DOWNS — They do go for it on 4th and 1, but Mixon gets stuffed on a run to the right side and the Dolphins get a big stop! They’ll take over from their own 24-yard line.

9:02 p.m. — On 3rd and 5, Burrow tucks and tries to run for the first down but gets stopped short. The Bengals look like they will keep the offense on the field.
8:59 p.m. — Another 3rd and short, another Mixon first down. Hon his 11th carry of the night, he powers up the middle to move the chains once again.
8:58 p.m. — On the ensuing 3rd and short, Burrow dumps it off to tight end Mitchell Wilcox, who breaks a tackle and surges ahead for a big 18-yard gain.
End of first quarter: Bengals 7, Dolphins 3
8:54 p.m. — Mixon powers ahead for a few decent gains to bring up 3rd and 1. That’ll take us to the end of the first quarter.
8:52 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Tua follows up his best throw of the night with his worst one. A deep ball intended for Hill gets picked off by Vonn Bell at the Cincinnati 36-yard line and the Bengals take over.

8:50 p.m. — What a throw by Tua. He threads the needle to find Mike Gesicki for a 21-yard pickup.
8:46 p.m. — The Dolphins get the ball back at their own 13-yard line and immediately get called for a hold to pin them back at the 3. Head coach Mike McDaniel then uses his first timeout.
8:41 p.m. — After a Mixon run goes nowhere, Miami brings pressure on 2nd down to force a hurried throw from Burrow — which falls incomplete. Burrow can’t connect with Mixon on 3rd and 8, and the Bengals will bring on the punting unit.
8:39 p.m. — Burrow and Co. have the ball back, but the Dolphins quickly force 3rd and 1. Burrow slings it out to Mixon, who lowers the shoulder and bangs ahead for a first down.
Bengals 7, Dolphins 3
8:34 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Jason Sanders comes on and converts the short field goal. Dolphins fans must be hoping that drop by Edmonds doesn’t come back to bite them.
8:32 p.m. — An end-around play to Hill goes nowhere, and after a short gain it’s 3rd and 4. Tua throws to Chase Edmonds in the back corner of the end zone but Edmonds flat out drops it. That should have been a touchdown.
8:29 p.m. — The Dolphins embark on their first drive of the night and immediately they get Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle involved. Tua finds each of his top two receivers on back-to-back plays to move it down to the Bengals’ 20-yard line.
Bengals 7, Dolphins 0
8:25 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Mixon gets it again on third down. He powers forward for a few yards before his teammates arrive to help push the pile into the end zone. An opening drive touchdown for Cincinnati!

8:17 p.m. — On an early 3rd and 1, Burrow finds his tight end Hayden Hurst for a pickup of about 20 yards.
