Elon Musk: ‘Heads Up,’ Humans Will Lose AI Control, For Real

Date:

Elon Musk, the prominent founder of xAI, recently dropped a bombshell, asserting that humanity is ‘straight up’ headed towards losing control of artificial intelligence within the next decade. According to the report, he predicts AI’s combined intelligence will outstrip that of all humanity in about five years. This isn’t just some tech-bro hyperbole; the well-known entrepreneur also envisions an unprecedented ‘age of abundance,’ where nearly anything we can dream of becomes a reality, yet this future comes with a pretty stark warning about AI Control.

Musk, speaking with The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, made it clear that he expects AI to surpass human intellectual capabilities across the board. ‘There really won’t be anything that AI can’t do better than humans, apart from being human, perhaps,’ he stated, as the article mentions. It’s giving us a timeline that’s both mind-blowing and a little unsettling, hinting at a future where our current understanding of intellectual dominance is, for real, completely reshaped.

While the idea of an ‘age of abundance’ sounds like a dream come true, a world where scarcity is a relic of the past, Musk doesn’t shy away from the darker implications. He continues to highlight the existential risks posed by advanced AI, even if he now believes there’s no realistic way to pump the brakes on its development. The momentum, as he sees it, is too immense to halt, making the quest for safety paramount rather than trying to hit a stop button that probably doesn’t exist anymore.

Given the unstoppable march of AI, Musk has pivoted his focus towards mitigation rather than cessation. His proposed solution is ‘on point’: he suggests that the leading AI developers worldwide should hold regular, mandatory meetings to address crucial safety and security concerns. Furthermore, he champions the idea of competing AI labs granting each other limited early access to their frontier models. This would allow for a crucial peer-review process, enabling them to flag dangerous capabilities before public release, with government intervention looming if serious risks aren’t addressed.

Despite his call for industry collaboration, Musk didn’t pull any punches when discussing his longtime rival, Sam Altman, and the evolution of OpenAI. He criticized the company’s trajectory, moving from what he described as a non-profit, open-source AI endeavor ‘owned by the world’ to an $800 billion closed-source, for-profit entity. This transformation, in his view, significantly deviated from its original mission, a sentiment that fueled a high-profile $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman, and co-founder Greg Brockman, which a California jury ultimately rejected in May, as the report indicates.

Musk also offered his take on the origins of Anthropic, suggesting its existence stems from a fundamental distrust of Altman among co-founder Dario Amodei and his team, implying they would have otherwise remained at OpenAI. He praised Amodei as a ‘very principled person’ who cares deeply about the future, noting that everyone he’d met at Anthropic seemed ‘well-intentioned.’ However, it’s worth a ‘heads up’ that critics, including Altman, have accused Anthropic of employing ‘fear-based’ marketing strategies to promote its Claude AI products, adding another layer to the complex rivalries in the AI space.

Ultimately, even with these pointed critiques and ongoing rivalries, Musk underscored the critical need for cooperation among competing AI companies on safety matters. ‘At the end of the day, if we have to talk, we’ll talk,’ he stated, as the article mentions. His message is clear: personal differences must be set aside for the greater good of the world, especially when dealing with a technology that has the potential to fundamentally redefine human existence. That’s a ‘no cap’ serious proposition. If you enjoyed this article, share it with your friends or leave us a comment!
