England will look to hit the ground running in the T20 World Cup after an impressive build-up to the tournament.
The 2021 semi-finalists prevailed 4-3 in a thrilling series in Pakistan before captain Jos Buttler returned from a calf injury in prime form to help secure a 2-0 triumph over hosts Australia, with the final match of their three-match rubber ending as a no-result with the tourists firmly on top.
Afghanistan’s showing in last year’s tournament in the UAE saw them progress straight to the Super 12 phase, with plenty of hopes once again set to be pinned upon their superstar leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
Here’s everything you need to know as both teams prepare to get their Group 1 campaigns underway

England vs. Afghanistan lineups
Chris Woakes is a doubt for England due to a tight thigh, meaning David Willey, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills are vying for a place in Buttler’s seam attack alongside Mark Wood and Sam Curran. Left-arm paceman Mills is in the squad as a later replacement for Reece Topley, who was ruled out of the entire tournament after learning he must undergo ankle surgery.
England predicted lineup: Buttler (C&W), Hales, Malan, Stokes, Brook, Moeen, Livingstone, Curran, Jordan, Rashid, Wood.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been passed fit to play after being struck on the left foot by a vicious yorker from Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi during Afghanistan’s Wednesday warm-up match.
Gurbaz was carried off the field and later pictured wearing a protective boot but scans revealed no fracture.
Afghanistan predicted lineup: Zazai, Gurbaz (W), Ibrahim Zadran, Janat, Najibullah Zadran, Nabi (C), Omarzai, Khan, Mujeeb, Ahmad, Farooqi.
England vs. Afghanistan betting odds
As you’d expect, England are heavy favourites to get their tournament underway by getting two points on the board.
Afghanistan don’t look like the most attractive outsiders in this match-up, but the opening round had its fair share of upsets, with Sri Lanka recovering from defeat to Namibia in their opener and West Indies on the way home after losses to Scotland and Ireland.
