Fairford Exit: US Bombers Pull Out, Citing Iran ‘Sketchy’ Situation, No Cap!

Date:

In a move that’s straight up got folks talking, the United States has pulled its B-1 bombers from the Royal Air Force (RAF) base Fairford in the UK. This abrupt Fairford Exit, confirmed by the Pentagon, comes amid growing concerns over a potential attack linked to Iran. Roughly a dozen such aircraft, which have been a familiar sight at the base, are now back on US soil, leaving many to wonder about the real implications of this sudden redeployment.

Reports surfaced quickly last Sunday about the urgent withdrawal, and while operational security initially kept details under wraps, a Pentagon spokesperson later confirmed to Al Jazeera that ‘all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States.’ The official added, ‘The Airmen that operate America’s bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime.’ No cap, the US military is making sure everyone knows they’re still in the game.

This significant withdrawal unfolds as the US and, according to the article, Israel are embroiled in a war against Iran, a conflict that has been going on for over seven months. RAF Fairford, located roughly 100 miles west of London, had been serving as a crucial stopping point for US bombers participating in this conflict. However, whispers of a ‘terror’ plot involving Iran targeting the base have been circulating, adding a very ‘sketchy’ layer to the whole affair.

The plot thickened on September 27 when UK authorities arrested five men on suspicion of planning to plant explosives near the base. While they were released without charge a day later after investigators found only petrol, not explosives, in their vans, officials are still on the case. Adding to the tension, British police announced on Thursday the arrest of a 25-year-old UK-Iranian dual national in London, also on suspicion of plotting an attack against the airbase.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham weighed in, suggesting last week that ‘Iran played a part’ in the alleged plot, though he didn’t spill all the beans. Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans underscored the complexity of the ongoing investigation, stating, ‘As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement.’ Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump praised UK authorities for their ‘fantastic’ work, asserting that the suspects had been ‘under view for a long time’ and were ‘gotten.’ Iran, for its part, summoned the UK ambassador to Tehran to protest the arrests, denying any such scheme.

RAF Fairford has a long and storied history as a pivotal US staging ground for Middle East operations, dating back to the Gulf War in the 1990s. It has also seen its share of anti-war protests, like in 2003 when activists broke in to thwart equipment use in the US invasion of Iraq. While the UK has largely refrained from direct participation in the ongoing war on Iran, the government, after initial hesitation, granted the US ‘defensive’ access to bases like Fairford and RAF Diego Garcia in March, according to the report. This historical context highlights the deep military ties and the often-contentious nature of such deployments.
