A Macomb Township man posing as a Detroit cop is facing a misdemeanor charge after attempting to pull over a car in Oakland County and then finding out the driver was an off-duty Waterford Township police officer, officials said.
Oops.
Christian Katan Mansoor, 18, was arraigned Wednesday in 52-3 District Court, charged with impersonating a public officer. A personal bond was set at $5,000, meaning no cash or surety had to be posted for him to be released from custody.
The incident unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday near M-59 and Crooks Road in Rochester Hills, where Oakland County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched after the Waterford Township cop reported someone in a silver BMW with red and blue lights drove up behind her and tried to pull her over, the sheriff’s office said.
After the alleged phony cop — later identified as Mansoor — passed the Waterford officer near Dequindre and Hamlin roads, she reportedly followed him to confront him, the sheriff’s office said. She identified herself as a police officer and asked Mansoor for identification, who allegedly claimed he was a Detroit cop from the 12th precinct, the sheriff’s office said. Mansoor then reportedly said he had to retrieve his ID from his car, which he walked back to and then drove away, the sheriff’s office said.
The Waterford police officer followed Mansoor to a trailer park in Shelby Township but lost sight of his vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies later found the vehicle and Mansoor as he was switching license plates from the BMW to another BMW he owns, the sheriff’s office said. He was arrested after a short foot chase, the sheriff’s office said.
“Individuals that pose as police officers present a threat to the public and undermine legitimate law enforcement,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated in a news release. “Thankfully, this individual was caught and is being held accountable for this incident. But if you had a similar incident with this described automobile or this pictured individual, please contact us.”
