Falcons vs. Panthers final score, results: Carolina runs all over Atlanta in rain-soaked ‘TNF’ win

The Panthers walked away from their Week 8 loss to the Falcons feeling like they should’ve won, and they finished the job at home.

Carolina took a page out of Atlanta’s playbook and ran the ball successfully all night, bludgeoning the Falcons’ run defense and racking up 232 yards on the ground.

P.J. Walker didn’t try to do too much, making throws when he needed but largely staying out of the way on a rainy night that didn’t play to the strengths of either quarterback. The Panthers put the Falcons in an early hole and forced them to throw the ball in the wet conditions, creating an environment that didn’t favor Atlanta’s offense.

Just as much of a factor was Marcus Mariota’s poor decision-making, which led to some costly sacks and hindered the offense in key moments. Mariota was able to put together a terrific touchdown drive while trailing 22-9, but the Falcons weren’t able to replicate their success when they had a chance to tie the game minutes later.

Mariota’s struggles will undeniably lead to calls for rookie Desmond Ridder to get a chance as the the Falcons suffer back-to-back losses for the first time since the opening weeks of the season. Atlanta (4-6) is still squarely in the NFC South race, which could impact that decision one way or another.

Even the Panthers, now 3-7, aren’t out of the division race just yet. Carolina doesn’t have a solution at quarterback, but Steve Wilks’ team faces only two teams with a winning record the rest of the way.

Falcons vs. Panthers live updates, highlights from ‘Thursday Night Football’

(All times Eastern)

Final: Panthers 25, Falcons 15

11:16 p.m. — The Panthers officially close out a rain-soaked win, improving to 3-7. Atlanta drops to 4-6.

Panthers 25, Falcons 15

11:14 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Finally, the Panthers effectively end this one with Pineiro’s fourth field goal of the night. 10 seconds left.

11:11 p.m. — Ikem Ekwonu has been penalized a few times tonight. That’ll happen sometimes for a rookie. Falcons should get the ball back, but they won’t have more than a few seconds to work with.

11:08 p.m. — Haynes takes down Mariota AGAIN. The Panthers have five sacks tonight, and this one clinches the win for Carolina.

11:06 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — Once again, Mariota just can’t avoid the sack. It’s 3rd & 19 after Marquis Haynes takes him down.

11:04 p.m. — The Falcons get the quick stop they needed and have plenty of time to put together another touchdown drive. They begin from their own 34 with 2:33 on the clock.

Panthers 22, Falcons 15

10:59 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — That was quick. Mariota hits Byrd, Byrd again, Pitts, and finally KhaDarel Hodge for a rapid touchdown drive. All of those catches went for at least 18 yards. Younghoe Koo misses another extra point, for some reason, but Falcons still have all of their timeouts down by seven…

10:57 p.m. — Tyler Allgeier has three catches for -17 yards. Might be time for the Falcons to reevaluate that play-call.

10:55 p.m. — Mariota runs for a first down to give the Falcons some breathing room. Atlanta still isn’t moving the ball fast enough while down two possessions.

10:52 p.m. — The Panthers play it conservatively but get nowhere. Luckily for Carolina, the Hekker punt pins Atlanta. The Falcons already needed a miracle to make this a game, and it just got tougher.

10:47 p.m. — Mariota has had a night to forget. He’s 13-of-22 for 103 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, but the decision-making has been even worse than the numbers indicate.

10:46 p.m. — Brian Burns sacks Mariota on fourth down. Panthers will get the ball back with a great chance to add onto their lead.

10:44 p.m. — Minor chaos. Mariota gets tripped up behind the line of scrimmage and throws the ball into a defender’s arms in the process, but he’s ruled down. 4th & 10. The Falcons have to go for it.

Panthers 22, Falcons 9

10:38 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Aside from the missed extra point on a bad snap, Eddy Pineiro has been money tonight. He drills it from 40 yards out to extend the Panthers’ lead.

10:37 p.m. — Carolina tried to run a play similar to the one that ended with Shenault in the end zone earlier, but he doesn’t get (nearly) as far. Third down here.

10:35 p.m. — The Panthers get another first down but are moved back by a false start penalty. They’ll gladly take a field goal here, if necessary.

10:32 p.m. — The Panthers pick up a quick 31 yards on a Foreman run and defensive holding penalty. Foreman is up to 109 yards, his third 100+ yard rushing game in his last four.

10:30 p.m. — After the Falcons got dumped well behind the line of scrimmage, Mariota throws to nobody on third down. Punt coming…

End of third quarter: Panthers 19, Falcons 9

10:25 p.m. — Olamide Zaccheaus emulates Terrace Marshall Jr. and fights for some big yards after the catch. Falcons are at about midfield already.

Panthers 19, Falcons 9

10:20 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — D’Onta Foreman runs 13 yards to the end zone to take the momentum right back from the Falcons! A bad snap leads to a missed extra point, but Carolina is in control up by 10.

10:18 p.m. — Walker finds a wide-open Shi Smith and has the Panthers approaching the red zone. Carolina has gone to the passing game a bit more on this drive.

10:17 p.m. — D.J. Moore was pulled off the field, presumably to be evaluated for a head injury.

10:15 p.m. — Nice throw by Walker over the middle, excellent catch-and-run by Terrace Marshall Jr. Marshall fights to take the Panthers into Falcons territory.

Panthers 13, Falcons 9

10:09 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Mariota finds Drake London for the touchdown! That’s London’s first touchdown since September. Koo misses the extra point, however, to keep it a four-point game.

10:08 p.m. — 1st & Goal for the Falcons after a nice run by Caleb Huntley. Atlanta is sticking to the three-headed committee in the backfield, even with Patterson healthy.

10:07 p.m. — Allgeier with a patient run to take Atlanta into the red zone.

10:05 p.m. — Ugly start to the drive for Mariota. He overthrows Kyle Pitts and is nearly intercepted on the next pass, but a pass interference penalty bails out the Falcons.

10:02 p.m. — The Falcons nearly get in there to block Hekker’s punt, but they’ll still start in great position.

10:00 p.m. — The Panthers are getting nowhere. If they can’t manage a first down on 3rd & 9, the Falcons are going to have excellent field position.

9:56 p.m. — Offense is going to be even harder to come by in this rain, and a terrific punt by Bradley Pinion won’t help matters for Carolina.

9:55 p.m. — Mariota can’t get rid of the ball and is forced out of bounds for a loss. No field goal attempt – Falcons will punt instead.

9:54 p.m. — It’s getting weird now. With the rain coming down harder, officials set the ball three yards behind where it should’ve been. Arthur Smith is unhappy.

9:52 p.m. — Now it’s Atlanta’s turn for a costly penalty. A holding call negates (but also caused) a nice run by Tyler Allgeier and makes it 2nd & 11 for the Falcons.

9:50 p.m. — The Falcons’ running game is gaining steam. Mariota takes off for 26 yards, and a holding call on Jaycee Horn adds onto it.

9:48 p.m. — The Panthers open with a sluggish first drive derailed by a penalty. Falcons avoid disaster and quickly get the ball.

9:35 p.m. — The Panthers are essentially doing what the Falcons do best and thriving on an effective running game. We thought the absence of A.J. Terrell might make the difference tonight, but it’s Atlanta’s run defense that has to step up.

End of first half: Panthers 13, Falcons 3

9:31 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Younghoe Koo connects on a 33-yard attempt to put the Falcons on the board. Panthers will get the ball out of halftime, setting up a critical defensive moment for Atlanta.

9:30 p.m. — With no timeouts, the Falcons play it very conservatively and set themselves up for a field goal try.

9:29 p.m. — The Falcons are starting to utilize their potent running game. Avery Williams takes the ball 12 yards, nearly pushing Atlanta into the red zone. Under 30 seconds left…

9:27 p.m. — Mariota completes to Drake London, and a late shot by Xavier Woods moves the Falcons up. Atlanta has a shot to score some points before the half.

Panthers 13, Falcons 0

9:25 p.m. FIELD GOAL  — How about this night from Eddy Pineiro? After his struggles cost the Panthers a win last time out against the Falcons, he just nailed his second field goal from 45+ yard field goal of the night to make it 13-0.

9:19 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — The Panthers’ running game continues to churn out chunks of yards. Carolina is inside the 30-yard line.

9:16 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Jaycee Horn intercepts Marcus Mariota to bring a quick end to the Falcons’ latest failed drive. The Panthers will start in Atlanta territory and have a great chance to add onto their lead before the half.

Panthers 10, Falcons 0

9:11 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — This game has some life! Laviska Shenault catches a pass behind the line of scrimmage and takes it down the sideline for what was ruled a 41-yard rushing touchdown. Panthers up 10-0.

9:09 p.m. — This has not been the most entertaining game, and it’s tough to blame the weather. Remember this night when Tom Brady and the 8-9 Buccaneers stroll into the playoffs.

9:07 p.m. — Tyler Allgeier nearly pushes ahead for the first down, but even 4th & Inches is much too risky for the Falcons deep in their own territory. The Panthers will get the ball back with solid field position.

9:04 p.m. — The Falcons start buried in their own territory after Johnny Hekker’s great punt.

9:01 p.m. — A sack by Dee Alford and Arnold Ebiketie buries Walker and the Panthers. A promising drive for Carolina ends in a punt.

8:58 p.m. — A false start pushes the Panthers back to 2nd & 17. They’re going to need some more yards to have a comfortable field goal attempt.

8:54 p.m. — Another first down for Foreman. Carolina is inside the Falcons’ 30-yard line.

8:53 p.m. — The Panthers are well beyond midfield as they continue to feed Foreman the ball. Foreman is up to 45 yards on nine carries.

End of first quarter: Panthers 3, Falcons 0

8:47 p.m. — Panthers are moving the ball better than expected through a quarter, but still a long way to go on this drive if they want some points.

8:44 p.m. — Foreman bursts ahead for a first down. He played well against Atlanta the first time and looks like the focus of the Panthers’ offense early tonight.

8:41 p.m. — Back-to-back penalties on the Falcons. 3rd & 9 becomes 3rd & 19, and the next penalty is declined to force an Atlanta punt.

8:38 p.m. — Key 3rd & 9 coming here for Atlanta. A field goal from here would be more than 50 yards.

8:36 p.m. — The Falcons have shown a willingness to throw the ball early, a bit of a surprise given the weather and their style of offense.

8:35 p.m. — Damiere Byrd hauls in a pass over the middle for 19 yards. Falcons are past midfield for the first time.

8:34 p.m. — Cordarrelle Patterson was close to breaking free on the kickoff return…but he gets tripped up at the 34-yard line. Still, better field position than last time for Atlanta.

Panthers 3, Falcons 0

8:31 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Eddy Pineiro, whose struggles were a defining part of the last matchup between these two, barely knocks through a 46-yard field goal. Carolina strikes first.

8:29 p.m. — Walker takes a shot to the end zone and is VERY lucky Darren Hall didn’t intercept it.

8:27 p.m. — P.J. Walker starts strong with a 20-yard completion to D.J. Moore. Falcons could’ve used A.J. Terrell on that one.

8:26 p.m. — The Panthers’ first four plays: Foreman, Foreman, Foreman, Foreman. Looks like D’Onta Foreman will be running the ball often tonight.

8:21 p.m. — Tyler Allgeier gets dumped behind the line of scrimmage to end the Falcons’ drive. Carolina will get the ball for the first time tonight.

8:19 p.m. — A little bit of a shaky start to the Falcons’ drive with another penalty, but a pass to Kyle Pitts coverts a first down. Pitts has been targeted twice early.

8:15 p.m. — We’re underway! The Panthers kick off to Cordarrelle Patterson, whose return to the 27-yard line is knocked back 10 yards by a holding penalty.

8:09 p.m. — How about these Panthers helmets? The NFL’s relaxed helmet rule is the gift that keeps on giving.

8:07 p.m. — P.J. Walker played well against the Falcons in Week 9, but he threw for only nine yards in a half before getting benched last weekend. It’s fair to say he’s playing for his job tonight.

7:46 p.m. — This was the best pregame story: Falcons OT Jake Matthews traveled back to Atlanta for the birth of his son today and returned in time for tonight’s game. He’s active and set to start.

7:40 p.m. — It’s a wet, breezy night in Charlotte, but by all accounts the conditions aren’t as ugly as they could’ve been. North Carolina is feeling the early effects of Tropical Storm Nicole. Keep an eye on the kickers if the wind picks up…
