Families with TWO dishwashers divide internet – what’s the second one used for?

Why do some people feel the need to have a pair of these machines? Some say it’s crazy and a waste of time, while others think it’s a brilliant idea – what do YOU think?

The endless cycle of loading and unloading the dishwasher has driven some to consider buying two such machines

Plenty of us have a dishwasher – but, incredibly, many people have two of them!

But why would anyone choose to do such a thing?

After all, one washing machine is enough, and so is one tumble dryer – so what’s the big idea of having a pair of dishwashers?

This issue sparked plenty of debate on reddit, where a user posed the question “Two dishwashers … is it a ‘what were they thinking’ idea? And if not, please help me decide how to approach this”.

‘Having two does make a lot of sense’

If you think about it, having two dishwashers does make a lot of sense.

Loading and unloading the machine is an undeniably pesky chore – and if the latter isn’t done on time then dirty dishes start piling up all over your kitchen. We have all been there.

And if this situation isn’t swiftly rectified, you can bet that someone will start putting the filthy items IN WITH THE CLEAN ONES – which is incredibly annoying.

This is where the genius of two dishwashers comes into play – why not skip out the ‘middleman’ of the cupboard?

With two dishwashers, there is no tiresome unloading part.

‘Rinse and repeat – quite literally’

One dishwasher acts as a sink for dirty dishes, while the second is like a shelf – storing the clean dishes. When the former gets full, turn it on, and swap the roles. Rinse and repeat – quite literally.

One user was quick to respond, saying they liked the idea but it probably wouldn’t work in reality.

They said: “If you have a busy family and think you can easily switch between one dishwasher being the clean one and the other being the dirty one, you’ll quickly find yourself blaming someone for putting dirty dishes in the clean dishwasher. Then you have to run both dishwashers to get clean dishes.”

Another user made the point that dishwashers are not intended for dish storage.

They posted “Even if clean dishes are kept in the ‘clean dishwasher’, it’s probably going to have a lingering smell over time.

“The airtight seal is just not a good idea for dish storage, in my opinion”.

‘Will just take more time in the long run’

Elswhere, a poster said that unless you used the same dishes and utensils, you will never know what is in a cabinet and what is in one of your two dishwashers – adding it will take more time to find stuff than it would just to empty a single machine.

Another offered a tongue-in-cheek alternative, saying “just go to Ikea and buy a pallet of dishes, cups and utensils. Then just throw them away in the garbage after you eat”.

While another would once have deemed the idea of two dishwashers ‘silly and a waste of time’ – but have changed their mind since having a family.

They posted: “Now with three kids, I see how useful (two dishwashers) can be. I do not have either. Our running joke is ‘almost made it today’ – which refers to emptying the sink. We very rarely don’t have it piled with something.”

One poster has some friends with two dishwashers, which they often use following large gatherings.

Finally, another said: “As long as you can clearly see which one is clean and which is dirty, should be just fine.”
